I have a rem 1100 20 gauge (serial ending in X) and a girlfriend that is around 5'4" thin framed, she has no real an issue with recoil, but I am positive the stock is too long. The stock is almost an inch longer than my Higgins, 870 Trap, and SX3. something needs to be done with it. confused on my two options, I do prefer the look of wood on a gun.

--- Buy a new/used wood stock and cut it down 2 inches, 1)...is it possible to buy a new stock that matches the current forearm or do I have to buy both buy both? 2)...Is the forearm the same size as the 1100 12 gauge forearm?

---Buy a youth sized stock and forearm (wholesale or cabelas), 1)....is there such a thing for a 1100 20 gauge ##...X? 2)... is the youth forearm smaller? from reading the cabelas website I get the feeling I have to have the LT model (serial ending in K or U)

I am pretty happy with the 1100 so far I'm not all that excited about buying a ton of trap/skeet loads for the 20 gauge but I'm sure she will be moving up to a 12 gauge, she has shot the sx3 and never really complained. And like most she probably wont stay "thin framed" forever. Just have to remind her to lean into the gun/target, not back, like she's setting a hook. The weight of the 1100 is nice for her though, Ive carried it all day pheasant hunting and it was pretty nice.

thanks in advance for any responses or opinions, even if I don't agree.:p

You said it yourself "she will be moving up to a 12 gauge". I say, save your money and make due with the 1100 as is, when she is finally ready pick up a 12 gauge that is more suitable to her size and shooting needs.

Rather than spend the money on the 20 gauge, just buy the 12 gauge. You can probably find one with all the adjustables and a short stock. 12 gauge is far more flexible when it comes to finding light loads, if you need them. A properly fitting gun has way less recoil and the scores will improve big time.

I have that exact same gun, it's essentially a full-frame 12 gauge gun, with a 20-gauge barrel. But I am surprised that the stock is so long compared to other guns. Does it have a big recoil pad on it? You could try removing that and just going with a thin plate. The recoil from that gun is negligible.

My daughters started shooting a 20 ga. 11-87 Youth model, it was perfectly sized for them. My oldest, who is now about 5'-4", is now able to shoot my Mossberg 930 12 ga, but she has progressed well with the smaller, lighter, softer gun.

FYI, if you take a regular-sized gun (with say a 28" barrel) and cut off 2" of stock, you've made a very muzzle-heavy gun which is even harder for young/female shooters to handle. That's why all Youth/Ladies guns have such short - 21" - barrels, to get them to balance better.

I'm a 5'5" lady and find I have to cut down EVERY long gun I get. I hate how the only guns that are built for short people are 20 g or small calibre. Either cut down a wood stock or get an adjustable tacticool one. It's so much easier to shoot when the gun fits!

If that's your girl friend in your avatar photo, all the info above is irrelevant until we can
get a real good close up shot of her.
This is the best way to decide what would work for her.
And not to mention, less cloth on the frame work would reveal to us the manner
in which she is formed in order to best judge for you the best fitting shot gun for her.
You know we do this out of sheer respect for our fellow Gummutter's ........aye?
To voice a proper opinion, the goods really do have to be displayed.
Sort of like, "what's my gun worth" scenario.

Actually a bit surprised to see that many response so soon, and none the one I was hoping for. so I suppose have definitely gotta think this through some more. ok regardless of 12 gauge or 20 i know she needs a shorter than man sized stock. even after starring at the guns for hours the last few days i have realized the 20 gauge is to long even for my comfort. so still gotta cut it down or buy something else.

Grouse man.

You're right the recoil pad definitely holds some of the blame, so that scenario went through my head too. but when I took the recoil pad off and tried to size the girlfriend she gimme a funny look like I had taken her pillow away and put railway tie on her bed. I understand that the recoil is fairly minimal for this gun, but I also know that when I shoot sporting clays/skeet/trap or birds most of the skill needed is in my head, my muscles all ready know the drill. So I can only imagine if it looks to her like its not gonna be all soft a squishy like the rest of my guns, then its gonna hurt, or at least be in her head.

Grouse man.

Excellent point, I never even gave this a thought.... Chop down the barrel and the stock? maybe a new youth model is in order!, 21" inches though seems like it would be way to fast to swing? maybe not?

Kamlooky. If that's your girl friend in your avatar photo, all the info above is irrelevant until we can
get a real good close up shot of her.

Ummmmmm nope not her. The avatar comes from the zillions of miles traveled on the WWW and just happens to be one pic that I could or wanted to relate to. The avatar has been around long before my Girl. I found no disrespect in the response. This is a Canadian forum, I lived in the 'Loops for a while, and well I feel strangely sympathetic for a naked fish that wears a cowboy hat, and has no fingers for his obvious single action revolver. poor guy can't even #### his hammer ;)

I would keep the original stock and pick up another and cut it down. If it is a X frame 20ga a 12ga stock will fit and they are a dime a dozen. 20ga forearm is different but that pattern is the same on all 12 and 20ga vintage 1100's which yours is
