Here's one for the Longbranch gurus. The wartime S.A.L operations at Longbranch were terminated at the end of 1945 to be replaced by the post-war C.A.L organization in the Longbranch plant. What's the best read on when C.A.L started producing No4 components with the C.A.L markings? I've owned 1950 vintage No4s with a mix of C.A.L and S.A.L marked parts and am wondering if there is a consensus on when the C.A.L markings started to appear, specifically if they are seen on rifles which were overhauled at Longbranch during the 1945-1950 period.

My 49 LB had all CA marked components on it.

Sadly I don't have any pics of the buttstock markings on any of the 3 Cno7's I've owned. They would give you a better read as they were being made in 1946 unlike the No4MkI*.

The title of "Warren"'s post is deceiving. "Canadian Arsenals Limited" was created and took over "Small Arms Limited"'s "Long Branch" factory January 1st, 1946.

The "CA" marking became an official Canadian Government Property marking on August 29, 1947...

?? I'm a little confused on that one. All this time I've thought CA was Canadian Arsenals.
My EAL has CA all over it and so did the civilian ones?

In the fifties, the Canadian Government proof was that maple leaf proof seen on DCRA conversions etc.

If you re-read the info "Warren" posted, it reads:

"...for His Majesty's use in or on stores and property in the custody or produced by Canadian Arsenals Limited"

So it is a Canadian Arsenals marking to show ownership by the Crown in Right of Canada.

The EAL rifles were assembled of CAL componants ~ originally manufactured for the Gov't of Canada, and therefore "property ... produced by Canadian Arsenals Limited".

The "rolled Maple Leaf" or duckfoot marking always has a "P" at the bottom, it is a proof mark ~ probably a firing proof rather than a viewing (inspection) proof.

I believe the "Inglis Diamond" has a copy of the official paperwork explaining the "Maple Leaf Proof" you are refering to.
