Now I have this in the general firearms section of CGN also but I thought maybe it would be a good idea to post it here as well.
This is found in the front section of the 2010-2011 Hunting Regulations guide or online at the MNR website for ONTARIO hunters.
Those who are aware we in Ontario cannot hunting Small Game with a rifle larger than 22LR during Moose/Deer/Bear season unless you have a corresponding tag for that large game. I called the ministry on it and emailed a few people (ministry, and government) back around 2007/2008 about it. Because I was concern that it is ILLEGAL to hunt Moose/Bear/Deer with a rimfire rifle, however I cannot hunt with larger than 22LR meaning I cannot use a 17 HM2, 17 HMR, 22 Magnum unless I had those tags/licenses.
In the new regulations the pending change is proposed.
Presently, several regulations refer to firearms of greater
“projectile power” than a .22 calibre cartridge. Because
the term projectile power is not standardized within the
firearms industry, proposed changes will replace this
terminology by “muzzle energy”, which is an industry
standard term and the standard is proposed to be set at
55.3 m-kg (400 ft-lb).
The way I read it (Understand it). I can now use the other calibers without problem. This is a positive change and really allows us to use some more fun/accurate firearms as well.
I also emailed the MNR to double check to make sure I understand it correctly.
