I am told its a simple matter to machine out a 2-3/4" chamber to 3 inch.....

What I'm wondering.... Are most 12gauge shotguns built to take the pressures?

I feel sceptical...... but would appreciate any thoughts on this.

thanks in advance,

Lucky

dont mean to hijack, but how about just changing a barrel on an 870 from 2 3/4 to 3" chamber barrel, is there any issues firing from a standard receiver? or are magnum receivers somehow different?

It depends on the gun and how much metal is left after machining. Chamber thickness should be measured. Are you thinking of a certain gun you want this done to.

This is purely speculative , but I was considering doing this with a Browning Side x Side ...

I'm looking for a quality 3" sxs .... for goose hunting....

Many Thanks,

Lucky

also...... good question, Luke....I was also wondering if 3" actions were made heavier?

The ejectors are not the same on 2-3/4" and 3" receivers.

Would that prevent it from firing safely? How different are they? The tail end of the shell is the same regardless of shell length, or am I missing something

EDIT: oops I was thinking extractor, not ejector

If you are doing a Browning SXS you will be fine Pressure of a 3'' will be no more than a 2 3/4'' mag. in fact just have the forcing cone opened and you will be fine.

If the Browning has chromed bores, a carbide reamer will be needed.

The placement of the actual ejector in the ejector housing is further to the rear in 3" 870s.
The ejector assmbly incorporates the barrel indexing key. The assembly is riveted to the receiver. Replacing the assembly isn't particularly difficult, but a first class job requires refinishing of the receiver.

Agree but somewhere in the production run on the 870 wingmasters remington started to produce just the receiver with the 3" set up even in 2 3/4 guns. That is why you hear guys on the site from time to time say they put a 3" barrel on the old 2 3/4 wingmaster and the receiver worked fine as is.Problem is not even remington can tell you the serial number or year this change took place but agree it did.One quick look if you know what the 3" set up looks like is all that is needed on some 2 3/4" receivers.

Ya all the new ones are 2 3/4" or 3" so it makes sence that Remington switched over.
Can the same be said about a simple ejecter repositioning for converting 3" receiver to 3 1/2"? My barrels will handle 31/2" but my 870 receiver is only 3"?

I found one pic online, and I see the difference, just not sure what my wingmaster is
