Changing a regular SKS to an SKS D?

Everything is possible given enough stubbornness and lots of money but I would avoid doing so.
The SKS is so available that finding a trade with someone's Model D is easier and a whole lot cheaper.
Besides, what is the point of converting what was designed from ground up as a very rugged and dependable lttle carbine into an AK ersatz with no hold-open device?
And having to lug those long 30/5 round magazines is a pain in the butt, too. Their one and only quality is to give you enough grasp and leverage for insertion into the mag well, a very difficult task with 5 round cut-down magazines.
You guessed it: I'm not a big fan of the Model D.
PP.

Keep you current SKS and go take $150 bucks and buy one of the umpteen SKS-Ds that show up for sale in the exchange forums regular as clock work. With the price of SKS, it just isn't worth it to #### around trying to do a conversion. You can buy a new D for $200 or less!

I for one have never seen a new SKS-D for under 200bucks.
Most of the ones on here go for like $275+.
I'd imediately buy one for 200$.

converting an sks to a D is a bad plan, even after the pricy conversion it may not work as well as if you had bought an actual "d" model. i would suggest selling your sks and buying a used "d" model off the form. sixty9santa was right tho...its gunna be more than 200$

stripper clips make for a faster reload than the neutered 5 rounders.

i used to have a D, it was dead reliable and accurate as sks' go, but getting a magazine to latch was a pain and it had the softest wood stock i have ever seen.

i no a groupe of guys back in my home town who did it to 10 of there sks rifles took too much time. plus they had there own mechean shop. but it didnt cost them much.
talk to ya all later
