Trying to do some research. I'm assuming you can get a gunsmith to change the Full choke on a barrel to a Improved or Modified. Is this typically very involved or expensive. Should most gunsmiths be able to do this?

Thanks

Two options:
- get barrel threaded for chokes. About $100-$150.
- ream out the fixed full for IC or MOD. Probably $50-$75?

Depends on the value of the shotgun and thickness of the barrel.

More details please...

A single, non-chromed, barrel just gets reamed and isn't a big deal. $65 at Epp's. Local smithies shoud be close to that.
Plan "B' is a changeable choke, like a Remchoke. $100 plus the cost of the choke tubes at Epp's. Tubes run around $10 each. Costs more because there's more machining time required. Does give you all the chokes though.

Make and model and if it is chrome lined or not... all affect the answer.

Many older barrels can not have factory style choke tubes installed but require thin wall tubes and in some cases even those can not be done. It requires careful measurement by the installer to determine this.

Opening a fixed choke is no big deal for most smiths... only if the barrel is chrome lined does it become a problem for some... not all have carbide tooling..
