changing color of new laminate stock

wood finishing question for the experts. i have a new laminate stock finished in a brown walnut[ or close to it] and want to change the shade to black/grey. is it just a matter of sanding it down and reapplying a different color or is it more involved? tks

Are you trying to make a salt and pepper type stock finish? I think the laminate pieces are stained before they are glued together. I wouldn't think you can do it after. Either sell it, or trade it for a salt and pepper version.

I agree with the above post... I think the colour is in the wood when it is resin impregnated and assembled... but you may be able to sand down and stain it somewhat darker...

I have tried to do this on a stock with little success. As the wood is pressure dyed before being laminated. Any wheres such as the grip area or top edges, forend where the laminate is very thin will tend to take the stain and block out the layers of the laminate. End result was sanding down the stock again and finishing it in Tru-oil. looked way better. You may be able to use a semi transparent automotive paint and then seal with clear coat to get an effect closer to what you are after. There have been some pictures on the board here that were done in candy red etc.
