Changing forward assist knobs

I want to swap a forward assist knob in an upper. It is an oversized thing seemingly meant for competition shooting.
I see a pin through the tube.
How does the unit come out?

Drive out the roll pin. The whole unit should come out as one. Replace with a new assembly, push in on the plunger, line up the hole and push the roll pin back in. They are pretty easy to replace. Be careful however, the plunger is under some tension.

Thanks hoddie. Does the pin come out from top to bottom or does it matter?

I can't remember off hand, but you should be using a punch that is the same size as the roll pin. This will ensure you push it out, not widen the pin and get the punch stuck in the hole. Lightly tap it with a small hammer until it starts to come out. Then use some pliers to twist it out of the hole. With the pliers, you may more clearance if you drive it out from the bottom to the top.
