Just got my first semi-auto shotgun! Woot! This thing is a blast.

I bought the Mossberg 930 Waterfowl addition with the 28" ported barrel and synthetic furniture. Going to try to build a 3-gun/Trap hybrid.

I'm looking at importing shotgun parts from the USA, has anyone gone through this? The rules for shotguns aren't governed by the ATF like other firearms parts and the company I'm dealing with was no help via e-mail. I received this back:

"We do ship to Canada. Buyer is required to be aware of any rules and regulations that would affect the items purchased."

I order firearms parts from Brownells. They make no distinction between shotgun parts and those for other firearm types.

But are you talking about actually doing the importation process yourself? In that case, maybe you mean "exporting from the USA". Firearm parts are not generally a problem to import into Canada. They are subject to heavier restriction in exporting them from the USA, and that's where the paperwork lies. Or am I missing something?

Yeah, I suppose I'm referring to "exporting" from the US rather than "importing" into Canada. We're sweet that way.. The Americans aren't so fond of letting weapons cross the border.

A buddy says he's ordered the same parts from the same supplier I'm buying from, so there's hope.

I've ordered parts for AR's and such from Brownell's myself, wasn't any issues.

Read the following and you'll understand why I was concerned.

$500 EXEMPTION DETAILS

Note: as of July 2013, the previous “$100 limit” has been raised to $500 USD”.
Details about the exemption found in 22 CFR 123.17(A).

United States law (specifically the “ITAR” – International Traffic in Arms Regulations”) allows for the export without an export license of certain firearm-related parts and components. This guide provides some details about the so-called “$500 Exemption.” Here are the basics:

Does not apply to any parts/components related to Shotguns (these are regulated by the U.S. Department of Commerce rather than the U.S. Department of State, and there is not an equivalent exemption for shotgun parts in the Export Administration Regulations).

Does not apply to ammunition-related parts and components. These are classified as “Category III on the U.S. Munitions List, while the exemption only refers to “Category I(a) firearms.”

Does not apply to “Significant Military Equipment,” which includes any firearm itself.

Also does not apply to barrels, cylinders, frames (receivers), or complete breach mechanisms.

Exemption can only be used and claimed by a DDTC Registered Exporter (not just any business, nor a foreign individual traveling in the US).

By law, orders cannot be broken up into smaller shipments to meet the $500 threshold.

It is defined in the law as $500 “wholesale” value, so in limited cases we may export something that retails for slightly more than $500 USD if our wholesale cost is less than $500 USD.
