been toying with the idea of trying to rebarrel or rechamber the m305 to 30 06, like a garand, anyone have any thoughts on this?? will the receiver/bolt accept such a conversion?? am i nuts to think about trying?? hehe :D

I'm curios why you'd want to switch to 30-06? I on the other hand would like to change my Garand from 30-06 to .308 just for the sake of better ammo availability. So why 30-06?

You could change to any other short action cartridge based on the .308 case. 30'06 (& similar based cartridges) are too long.
New barrel would be required.

was thinking more along hunting lines with the 30 06 idea. my brother and i are set up for reloading with that caliber. I figured a rebarrelling would be in order but i'm not all that familiar with the differences in the case dimensions between the two, I'm brand spankin new to reloading and have much to learn.
i suppose a .308 in 165 gr will kill a moose just as easy as a 30 06 will in similar grain weight so maybe i should just leave well enough alone :D :D

30-06 and 308win are identical, except the case length is longer with the 30-06.the noticable difference is when you get into heavier bullets.the larger powder capacity of the 30-06 makes it better suited to bullets that are heavier than 180grains. the ballistics up to 180grains are very close.

You'd also have to modify the magazine on the M305. I think the 30-06 is 63mm long, while the original ammo for the mag (.308) is 51mm long. I think you'd be better off getting a Garand, or just hunting in .308.

Wont work as the 30 06 cartridge is to long IE;Long action While the M14 is a short action

oh well, another crazy idea bites the dust hehehe
thx for the input guys, sometimes i need to be "kept in check" from some of my hairbrained ideas :D :D

.243, 7mm-08. it is possible to do a conversion to .358 winchester but you would need a heavy barrel set up anf different gas cylinder for that (all are based on the .308 case. You are better off leaving it alone though, the .308 is powerful enough, the sights are calibrated for it's ballistics, cheap military ammo is available for it. The only true caliber for an M1A is 7.62X51mm and the only true one for a garand is .30-06;)

if you want to go to 30-06 levels, how about a 30-284 win wildcat?- someone offered to do this for me years ago in a savage 99, so it would also work in the m305/14/whatever- however as to whether it could take the pressure, and hammering of the"heavier" cartridge is a different story, given the caveat of sticking to 168 grains or less

The only way I can see you do this is by conferting a Garand into a M14. Since the 308 is short action, there is no way you can have the action, magasine and so on strech. The Garand is 30-06. I am shure that if you start with a receiver and barel of a Garand and "transfer" it to a M305/M14 it could be done. With a lot of work. Good Luck.:)

there is no advantage changing the 14 to 06 aside from a slight (200 fps or so) velocity gain- the same bullet weight caveat applies as well for the garand- the only advantage right now is the garand has a 3 shot advantage due to an exemption for the magazine capacity issue, and no, simply dumping a garand recevier into a 14 stock won't work- you don't have that half inch extra in the mag well, and everything ends up in the wrong spot- you'd be far better off trying to duplicate the m1 garand conversion that uses bar mags
