Hey guys I'm changing out the butstock on an No.1 Mk3, does it matter if the new but stock is a no.3 or not? As well i've heard that you must take off the forestock before taking off the rear stock because that little square nut may crack it. Any truth to this? I'd love to hear your personal experience as I embark on restoring this badly bubbazied rifle.

The no1 and no4 butt stocks are prety much the same but the no1 had the place for the brass discs in the side. You are going to need to remove the forstock because yes it will crack it as the no1's forstock butts up against the bolt for the stock.

Yes, remove the forend first. If it won't come loose even after everything is removed, you may have to slightly tighten or loosen to take the lash out of the stock bolt square tip which might be holding on to the forend.

A No 4 buttstock will fit but they are shaped a bit differently. The buttplates are different too.

And many years ago when I first started collecting Enfields, I did hear that CRACK!
Lesson learned!

If, after you remove all the screws (you don't need to remove the one holding the rear sight ears) and the forend seems stuck, DO NOT pull down on the front end. Take a block of wood, set it on the stock in the reciever area, and lightly tap the block with a mallet. There may be dried grease holding the forend in that area.
