changing point of impact?

just wondering is someone can share any ideas here. I have a 243 win that is driving me a bit crazy. I take a few shots at 100yds and it seems to group nice then all of a sudden the point of impact will move 4 or 5 inches and then group good at this new spot for a few shots. bases are tight, scope rings are tight, scope is a newer leupold, action screws are all tight. the only variable I can see is the new stock. The gun apparently shot well in the original stock but was just set into a new boyds laminate when I got it. does it just need a bedding job or is something else going on?

I would say every Boyds stock should have the inletting cleaned up and be bedded if you want to get consistency out of it. Inletting is never square on the ones I've ordered, always something off somewhere.

This /\ I completely agree. Even most off the shelf factory stocks aren't square. The odd tupperware stock is remarkably good as are the Hogue overmolded offerings, especially those with the aluminum bedding blocks. Even those tighten up groups with a skim coat of bedding.
 
Even if the issue was the stock......4-5" seems like a huge jump. How much movement could the action really have? Not saying it's not possible......

Do you have another scope you can try?
 
I had the same problem before, but I was putting the blame on the muzzle brake.... the scope ended up being the problem. I took it off the rifle and put it on another rifle I knew was shooting 1/2" group constantly. Same problem, grouping fine then 11" shift up, then a few more rounds and 10" shift down etc...

Could be your bedding for sure as well. And also your barrel heating up and many other variables.

Post a picture of your points of impact but a scope issue usually will shift the point of impact in the horizontal or verticle very rarely will it be in both directions.
 
Check... barrel is free floated.. Cannot hit any where in the barrel channel.

Back off the ring bolts and retorque. Sometimes tight is too much of a good thing.

Does the POI shift follow any pattern? or does it just move and stay there for a bit.... then move again.

If it stays put for a bit, then shift, stay put for a bit, then shift, and the shifts can be in any direction, get the scope fixed.

Bedding screws may be tight, but are they tightening the action into the stock or are the screws bottomed out and not holding anything tight?
 
I have tried two scopes on it. It has a leupold tactical on it now. I did not keep any targets but I think I will get it bedded and looked over by a smith then go try again..
 
If the bedding is bad enough to cause that big of a change(4"-5") then you should be able to give it an easy check. Stand the rifle on its butt and hold your thumb lightly against the barrel and the top of the stock forend. Alternate loosening and tightening your action screws and if there is obvious movement at your thumb then you definitely have a bedding issue. Make sure the action screw is tight before switching to the other screw. Test your barrel for free floating by running a piece of paper down between the barrel and stock and see if there are any spots that touch. For there to be such a big change in POI I think there would have to some serious bedding problem. I'm leaning more toward a scope issue, unless you've already tried a different scope and had the same results.
