Changing uppers question

Had a thought randomly that I cant seem to find answer for. I attribute this to not having easily searchable terms coupled with our convoluted laws.

If a gent was to buy an NR FX-9 18.6" and buy a separate 4"/8"/10" upper, how does that work for swapping? Does it need to be registered as the shortest upper? Or if it can be swapped for different applications, is there some supporting section or documentation one could reference? I imagine any RCMP officer checking out a range haul with a short upper beside the NR version might jump to conclusions and call it an unregistered restricted, no? Same way most don't understand magazine laws as written.

Things I think about when I'm sitting on hold at the office. Enlighten me

This has been beaten to death. You have 30 days to report any mods that change classification. Whether or not that means you can do what you are asking legally is up for debate. Seems like a lot of guys online change the classification. I would never do that myself.

Keep in mind CGN's verboten topic #5 "Swapping non-restricted barrel for restricted barrel at gun range."

Someone minding their own business is unlikely to garner unwanted attention...

Fair. I didnt see it beaten to death in my travels as I'm mostly in the EE and finding the right search terms was eluding me. Thanks for weighing in, as redundant as it may have been.

I wasn't really complaining just mentioning it because even after all the discussion it remains a grey area. Maybe things have developed since I paid attention to the topic specifically but it's probably still a situation someone will need to test out...
