ChargeMaster Combo - tested at factory?

The ChargeMaster combo was delivered yesterday. On inspection noticed there are grains of gun powder in the quick drain valve...

Are these units tested before they leave the factory or is there an other explanation?

As mixing different types of powder is a bad idea am a little surprised to find gun powder in the unit. By all other appearances - plastic screen protectors, plastic bags, sealed carton, absence of marks on the unit it seems to be new (and was on backorder for weeks so...).

Might be.

You may have even got a factory reconditioned unit - one that was sent back for known problem, put aside and refurbed when they got around to it.

Mine is an late 08/early 09 model - just got it from LeBarons about a month ago. They just restocked with new units after Jan. This is why I waited for the current one - all the keypad issues resolved with the current build units.

I wouldn't be concerned about finding a few grains in it. Was the box in pristine sealed condition when you got it?

If it looks new, I'm sure it was in top shape when it left RCBS.

Cheers, Carl

Obviously it needs to be tested at the factory - how else do you think the machine is calibrated?

I'd be HAPPY that they test it there... nothing like finding out your measure 46 grains is actually closer to 50 the first time you pull the trigger. :)

When I got my 1500 ChargeMaster Combo it was 'clean'. However, when I got my tumbler, I was aware they sometimes had show demo models available. I called up and they had a Sidewinder demo available at a reduced rate so I opted for that. When it arrived, it was sparkling new looking but apparently it had been a show demo. Warranty etc was the same as for new so, I got it.

Johnn, Reduced rate makes sense if demo / reconditioned. Would not expect to be sold reconditioned as new.

Canucklehead, not obvious to me, thats why I asked the question. Been to a number of manufacturing facilities where QA in production process meant calibration performed on a test / sample basis (less labour intensive, faster production cycle, less cost...).

tps50701, how did you figure out production date? As mine was on backorder I figured new production too but perhaps recondition.

Didn't mean to sound like a #### - in fact, I'm not even sure they DO calibrate every unit. I assume, but maybe not. Hey, maybe YOUR'S was the one in five that they tested. ;)

Either way, if the unit was all sealed up, I wouldn't worry about some powder leftovers in there.

Once you figure out what powders you want to load, you may want to re-calibrate the machine - there are instructions posted somewhere on here, that will increase the speed of the throw dramatically!

Appreciate the reply. Do recall a thread on how to reprogram the chargemaster - recall thinking just how badly I could screw things up trying that :)

Cheers

The production date would be current for my unit, because I've compared it to one a friend of mine just got in the USA as well. Mine was after his, and his was also on backorder as well, due to the Obama rush on reloading eqpt!

Don't most scales come with a calibration weight?

Marc,
Mine had no powder in it when i took it out of the box , I would not worry about it , Just go through the calibration mode as it shows in the manual and start re-loading its a great tool :dancingbanana:

Am quite excited about it (especially after just having loaded a batch of 50 having measured each charge on the beam scale... trying some 180gr ballistic tips (quite long for their weight - .105" longer than Hornady of same weight), some 180gr interlock, and 165sptz bt. Want to see if can produce the same group I lucked into the first time I tried the rifle. Now waiting on Chrony.

Asked the question to RCBS - response received

yes the units a tested. I hope you were able to get the powder
out. We do in fact test the units for accuracy before we ship.

Thank you,
