After putting 250 rounds through my new Savage MAKO (THERE!! Happy now everyone? I shot it!) :) I'm realizing 32 cents a round is gonna be pricey after a while.

The guys at phoenix and P&D tell me you can't buy bricks of 17HMR, only boxes of 50, and if you buy 2,000 rounds the price per round stays the same.

That is bull####

I've been through dozens of websites and the cheapest I can find is at
www.theammosource.com where its 13.95 for a box of 50. Thats for the standard Hornady 17gr Vmax polymer tip.

Anyone have sources for CCI or Hornady or Federal Premium ammunition in larger quantities at volume discounts?

Also, i hear theyre all made by the same manufacturer but everyone says something different.

At the gun range the owner says there is only one manufacturer for 17hmr, but what I've been told on here is that the Vmax polymer tip is made by hornady and CCI manufactures everything else.

Whats the scoop

I've found pretty much the same...

It's a rimfire, but it seems very difficult to find cheap bricks of ammo.

If you find something please post it up! I currently pay $14.99 per 50 of that very same ammo. Wholesale has bricks... $149.99... I asked yesterday! So if you count the pennies, it's cheaper to buy them broken up!

its completely retarded.
I asked at a couple places and was told that profit margins on their rimfire ammo are between 14 and 20 points.
at 16.00 a box of 50 thats about 3.20 in profit. at retail in boxes of 50.

If someone started selling bricks of 1000 rounds for say $279.99 (thats $14 per 50 box) they'd still turn a profit. Now what I see happening is their supplier giving them better pricing on these volume packs, allowing them to have a wider point spread, and enabling us to buy in volumes of 1,000 and 2,000 for in the $12-$13 per 50 box range.

If I were a retailer, I'd be letting people buy 17HMR in volumes of 2,000 but allowing mix n match among the ammo types since they come in packs of 50.
Polymer tip, 20gr FMJ, and standard hollowpoint...

You'd have people lining up for miles if you could get it to 25c/round (12.50 per 50 box)
and thats still $500 for 2,000 rounds. I think we could do better... but thats reasonable.

7c/round discount for buying in volumes of 2,000 rounds should be a nobrainer.

He's selling hornady Vmax.. which are supposedly identical to the CCI TNT rounds (theyre all just polymer tip hollowpoint..) If theyre all made the same... shouldnt matter?

clay already answered my email and has some great offers on caselots...
$509 as advertised, with free shipping offered on large quantities (case and above)

now thats good business.

I bought into the 17HMR cult a couple of years ago. Bought an Anschutz MPR in 17 HMR . The rifle proved to be accurate but no more so than my Anschutz's in .22 LR.

I shoot at targets only so I decided to sell the 17HMR. Had I been a hunter I may have kept it, but the price of ammunition was far too costly. I can reload for my 223's for less than the 17HMR ammo costs.

at the 40 yard indoor range the other day without my scope even sighted in properly i was putting 10 rounds through 4-6 holes consistently.

I know at that range its not so impressive, but the range officers were unable to distinguish the holes in the paper from firing less rounds... some 5 round groupings with literally only 3 holes.. having passed exactly through the same hole dead on.

Clay seems like a really reasonable guy and if we can get it down to $500 a brick with free shipping, its worth ordering 4,000 rounds at a time... a brick of poly, and a brick of FMJ for game.

maybe in another year or two theyll have match grade ammo for targets/competing... and regular ammo will come down in price. I see no reason it should be over 20 cents a round...

Looks like after all this hunting, clay at prophet river is the best deal in the country for 17HMR as of Jan 2012, at 509.00 per 2,000 round brick with free shipping (as promised to me).

I hope to thank him for his efforts soon by making a nice fat order. If anyone in edmonton wants to split a couple bricks, let me know.

I've bought some gear in the past from Profit River and never heard about free shipping? There has to be a Hazmat charge in there, I'm pretty sure he isn't eating that. FS

HMR will have to get a lot more popular for the likes of eley to invest the amount of r&d funds to start making match ammo. Quick frankly making those little hollow pointed coated bullets is a lot costlier than making a lead blob like in a 22. I don't think you will see prices drop much on the ammo.

Match ammo for a 22 is $10-$17 a box, what do you think it will be for HMR? I am guessing $30.

Correct. A significant expense to ship ammo. If he gets a deceent size order to Edmonton we can get it shipped as we have people going there once in a while.

Ah, so this is a special case, and no free shipping to Ottawa. In that case I will continue to buy most of my ammo locally.

yup, much cheaper to ship by bus :)

I'd go in with people on a multicase order. I'm sure a lot of people would find it useful to pick up a thousand rounds of FMJ and a thousand rounds of Poly tip if we ordered a case of each or more.

you know the funny thing is for me the local prices on most ammo is so inflated that buying decent size order or two a year from out of province is worth the shipping.

I've placed two orders around $1300 total or so for mostly hunting ammo just in the last month alone from Lebaron mail order in Quebec and had it shipped here to Northern Ontario for 26 bucks and change, each time to the door with Canpar.
The cost of shipping the was less then the mark up on two boxes of higher end ammo. All the rest was cheaper... which means I saved a ton of money...when you can save between $5 and $15 PER box or more shipping is worth it hands down, as is availability.

Nothing worth then buying some crap that you know your gun shoots half ass instead of getting the stuff you know it really likes at a fair price!

There are always the guys who preach buying local from the gun shops but not at the mark up most around here charge.

I have two choices other then big box one is decent prices but no selection the other is they have the goods most of the time but are insanely priced.

So I leave both stores either with nothing or leave feeling RIPPED OFF!

On a good size order we can work out a great price, however, its case by case(excuse the pun). however, on a couple of boxes its likely way better to buy 'local'. With all the issues shipping ammo; (Haznet and weght) its tough to beat ocal even with great pricing. :(
