cheap .223 varmint gun

There is a recent group from my Stevens 223..3 shots touching, ona little out, and one way out (my fault, it was getting dark and I couldn't see very well)
In any case, 3 touching like that is a good indication of potential accuracy. I shot some other pretty good groups with it that day, but this was the load I settled on.
I had a NEF and now have a stevens 200. I was able to shoot a few good groups with the nef but it wasn't consistent...and nothing like the stevens.

I am leaning toward the stevens since it is not a single shot and it looks like I a pretty good shooter too. Pilot 24 I saw that you said that you were going to paint your stevens, what kind of paint do you use?? I dont like the color of the stock. Another thing I am worried about is that it doesnt have a heavy barrel and I would be using it as a gopher gun and be putting lots of rounds through it. Do I have to worry about barrel heating??

I dont have the $$$ for the 12fv, if I did I would get a 10fp. I was thinking of getting a .17hmr but wanted a little further range so started looking at a .223. That is why I am looking at .223 on a .17hmr budget. I might get a .17hmr but would like to look at my options first.
River Rat and I just got back from the range about an hour ago.
Here's three shots out of my Stevens 200 with a 25 year old Bushnell 3-9X40 Scopechief.
40 gr Nosler ballistic tips, 30 gr of W-W 748 and CCI 400 primers.
Measures exactly one half inch. Not bad for a rifle that doesn't have forty rounds down the tube yet!
Have another one on the way. It is going to become a 223 Ackley Imp.

not that I would try to dissuade a gunnut from doing someting impractical, but why not get a 22-250?
This made me snort Pepsi out my nose, coming as it did from Mr. Typo himself..
As for the Stevens in .223 does it start to string shots when it gets hot?
Personally a lighter barrel appeals to me as long as it still shoots when warm.
This rifle does not string shots at all.
I was checking to see if the point of impact changed with change in power setting of the scope. This was the third three-shot group that I fired today, without waiting between shots. Just load and shoot, load and shoot............the three shots in this group were probably in less than ninety seconds.
The first three shot group, by the way, went into an inch with the scope set at three power.
I am really looking forward to seeing how this thing shoots after it has several hundred rounds down the tube.
Clarke, the main reason for the 223AI is because everybody has a 22-250. Seriously, though, the 223 Ackley is an exceptionally accurate caliber and is just a lot of fun to play with.
