I can't shoot the cheap surplus crap at my local range... and spending a buck a shot sucks.
Is there a cheap solution in Canada for FMJ 762? (NOT STEEL CORE)
Or keep it for the woods and run with .223 at the range?

I have 3 half flattened steel cores from hitting a plate of ar500 at 200 yards. Its cool to show people a 7.62x39 round and then the steel core. Sucks your range doesnt allow it. The "cheap stuff" is getting more expensive everyday...

soon 7.62x39 will no longer be a cheap. It will be around for a while though something to do with the AK47 being a good gun or something.

If there is an outdoor range you may want to look into that option or a firearm more condusive to your range rules. rifles indoors are pretty loud anyways

Pardon my ignorance, but is it common for a certain type of ammo to not be allowed at a range? I've taken both my SKSs to my local range and pumped a load of surplus ammo through them. It never even occurred to me that some ammo might not be allowed.

Some ranges which have had lots of damage (steel gongs) from the steel core have banned the ammo.

Unfortunately

His range is crap then, nothing wrong with steel core ammo.

Bill, we had some issues with people from another club that we allowed to use our range, while their new range was being built. Most of those people were excellent. There were a few #### heads that just had to see if the steel cored bullets they were shooting would smash rocks, shoot through the overhead barriers, shoot through the base poles the barriers were set up on as well as darn near every other structure on the range. Someone even dragged some concrete blocks onto the range to break up. We ended the agreement to allow the guests use of our range after only a few weeks. Lots of sniveling from the fools that did the damage. GO FIGURE.

We don't prohibit steel core ammo and quite a bit of it gets used on the range. The thing is, there are #### heads out there that just have to screw up a good thing by using their little heads instead of their big heads.

To bad this happened to by synonymous with cheap surplus ammo. There were a few people that wanted to ban the stuff completely. Thankfully cooler heads prevailed.

Some shooters are not shining examples of our community.

OP, a cheap way to reload is to pull the steel cored bullets from your surplus ammo and replace them with cheap, bulk lead core bullets. Takes a bit of time and increases costs but not nearly as high as commercial ammo.

Steel core also messes up the concrete walls of berms/bunkers. (When losers can’t shoot straight or purposely aim for them)
Repairs get expensive fast.

I shoot a fair bit of steel-core 7.62x39 at appropriate targets, no problems. The problem is that the there is always some jerk that ruins it for everyone else. Some twit at my range shot up and ruined some steel gongs. Now there is talking of banning steel core ammo because of this.

So true, it’s always the smallest percentage of idiots out there that ruin it for others. Glad to hear cooler heads prevailed. It’s no different than when people can’t pick up their spent hulls and casings in the woods, it eventually ruins it for everyone else. I was out hunting the other day and picked up a box of 12g shells someone had left on the trail, slobs...

It’s just as easy to pack it back out as it was to pack it in, easier in fact. All the weight is now gone from the shell.

DVC indoor range has a great system. Steel core is only allowed for members. Public non members are not allowed. This governs behaviour well. Mess up and lose membership. Simple. Everytime I've been there all the members have been respectful.

Idiots at our range kept shooting the chains holding the steel gong, as well as damaged the gong itself. Piles of x39 "brass' all over the place. Thankfully, there's a zero tolerance policy at my club and people have become more vigilant. No ban yet, and my fingers are crossed... I love my SKS over everything else I shoot at the range.

I couldn't have said it better myself. the number of idiots I run into is astounding . so called steel core is banned at my range now . they claim it damages the back stop . I have walked down range and seen some of the damage people - morons have done to our target holders etc . I have walked out on the range more times than I can remember to tell people to raise or lower their targets. we have cameras up the wazoo watching everything . and that's fine with this guy . and yes turf the Liberals in 2019 .

We don't allow steel ammo at our range.

I know one guy who buys cheap surplus ammo, pulls the steel slugs, and replaces it with a Berry's Bullet.

Still relatively cheap ammo. And he gets to shoot his favorite rifles indoors.
