Cheap Rimfire ammo SUCKS Gopher Hunting Rocks

im surprized at the wee size of the dirt pigs out west....here in ontario we feed them liberal BS.... ;) :p the dirt pigs are huge here... its like you need at least a 30-06 to bag one

I went shootin' last weekend. Lotsa babies out there, that's for sure. Chipmunk sized. My 22 Hornet was literally ripping them in half. I've seen what you have out East, and they're a lot larger. I think they're probably different species

Depends on the gun

My bolt likes yellow jackets

The 10/22 like mini-mags (not too bad with yelow jackets either but I am still shooting with standard mags)

Both are good killers

I do like the Federal bulk for plinking though, the flipper target @ 25 or 50 is not precision shooting but you can burn though the ammo

Funny thing I had some great results on targets with the cheap federals but they SUCK for gophers like som other fellow said the keep crawling to their holes and I end up shooting the same bastard 3 or 4 times.
before it dies.
But then the cheap wildcat ammo kills em clean if the shot is placed well.

So basically CGI ammo is the best but more expensive? I bought a 500 block of winchester. Maybe I should give it to a friend and buy some CGI ammo.

Still pretty cheap at like $5 for 100

Well placed... I like that

A gopher has a 1/2" zone into which a shot could be considered 'well placed,' in my experience.

Some of the most gruesome kills I've gotten were with head shots - takes their face off, then they flop around for a bit. The chest area is just as small, but seems to work better.

All 22 ammo is cheap, in the grand scheme. Cheap enough that you should buy a box or two of everything the local sporting goods store has, and try them all out. Preferably on gophers. Then you'll get a good feel for what your gun likes, and what works best on critters.

my 10/22 doesn't like Stingers, I think it might be due to a slightly longer shell casing?

My gun loves yellow jackets, runs like a top with them. Anyone in the edmonton area need a gun nut to tag along on their next gopher hunt? I'm still searching for good fields.

meh

yesterday, i just picked up CCI Velocitors, Remmi Yellow jackets, Federal Highpower, and a big 500 round bulk pack box of federal cheapos.

gonna sight in the scope on the new camo 10/22, then play with grouping. i might still go out and pick up some Quick-shots CCI, and Winnie Super-X
