Are cheap scopes inaccurate?
Will the accuracy of a cheap $100-$200 suffer compared to a good $400-$500 scope or is it just the clarity, sharpness and brightness that they lack?

More expensive scopes typically track better and hold zero better, in addition to having superior optical qualities. They are also better able to withstand heavy recoil. Now there are some decent scopes in the $200 range, so don't necessarily go and spend $600 on a scope if you don't have to. It depends on what features you want and what you can afford.

IMO it is the reliability and durability that improve with price, but yes , when reliability and durability fail I would have to say that the accuracy goes kaput also.

A $100 Tasco may hold zero for a few shots then start to slowly waiver and you may not notice right away , get into a $500 Zeiss, you will have the same zero forever.

It might jump around because of recoil affecting the mechanism. Less problems on a 22, but you don't want to have to re zero every time. Or it might hold up fine. Lower quality means greater chance of problems, but it might be fine.

A real prob with cheap scopes is fogging
once that happens its garbage. A good
test is to put a scope into a pot of boiled
water if it doesn't leak there then it never will.

You can get an inexspensive rifle to be reliable and shoot accurately ... I dont feel the same way about optics at all. I would steer away from cheap scopes. With optics you really get what you pay for IMO. I feel so strongly about optics, im pretty much done with leupold. Night Force is my bottom barrel. My opinion is pretty extreme but ive run leupold and NF side by side for a year now and i will tell you from my experience NF is far more reliable... I am very hard on gear.

Again my opinion is very extreme for the average shooter but im just trying to make a point more than anything.

My Dad runs and loves the higher end Bushnell stuff, and i have to agree its very good for the money. Also i do think for the average guy that the Leupold VX-3 stuff and up is also very good. Im not a fan of the VX-2, VX- 1 or Rifleman stuff at all. I have a friend that is as serious as me about optics and really likes the Swaro stuff. He is also all over NF. No experience but Jerry from Mystic Precision really likes Sightron for the money on his long range stuff. From speaking to him on the phone and reading his posts he sure seems to know his stuff.

Just an opinion and a couple examples. Its funny watching the average shooter/hunter go down and drop big money on a high end rifle and cheap right out on his scope. I rather run Iron sights than a cheap scope.

Cheap scopes can be your worst enemy

I recently bought a Tasco 4-90x40 for my 17 HMR rifle. It held zero for the first day at the range. I went back two days later and it was off by 3 inches at 50 yards. That's a 6 MOA shift. Needless to say, that scope is junk, but for $40, it's a cool piece of junk. I already replaced the scope with something much nicer and the Tasco will be a paper weight on my desk and used to occasionally look out my windows....
