I am in search of a deer rifle and friend says will sell one of two that he has, first I love small rifles and he has a new savage axis compact chambered in 7-08 for $350 and a savage 340 in 30-30 for $250. Where I hunt a 100yds shot is a very long shot, I do reload and a 30-30 leverevolution ammo would be plenty in any chopping I would watch, neither rifle a scope but the 340 has a base and rings, which would you pick and would prefer opinions from people that had both rifles

Why don't you pick up a nice sporterized rifle in 6.5x55? probably be just about as cheap as your friends guns and would likely end up being a much better piece of equipment.

the 7mm-08 is a nice cal but so is the 30-30. I cant stand the axis stock so my vote is for the 30-30. Yes I have owned both and both are gone now. The axis was a lazer beam in .223 and the 340 just a solid hunting rifle.

mausers are to heavy

I love compact rifles too...... but not a chance I would compromise quality to save weight.... especially to the levels you are talking about..... and especially not in a deer rifle.....

In your situation, I would be rocking that Mauser.........

How will you be hunting? Spot and stalk?, tree stand, driven hunts with you dogging?

the 6.5x55 that have is a numbers matching military mauser the only action it sees is at the range, 29" barrel won't be that much fun in the bush, I hunt from a blind or just slowly walk in the woods, depends on the weather, I do have a 303 lee enfield which my shoulder can not handle

Fair enough...... BUT,

You obviously see the value in owning a quality rifle...... and I get that...... so why not buy a quality hunting rifle?.....

I am a ruger fan and will admit that, but to give you a couple "off the top of my head" options, you would be far better off with a ruger scout, ruger compact or Remington model 7 chambered in 308....

all those are all very good rifles and about 3x my budget, and I still have to get glass, I would rather have a tikka t3, I have a t3 compact in 204 ruger and it's a joy to hunt with

As per the OP question, go with the 340 in 30-30 for 250.00. Once you've bought it then offer him 250.00 for the Axis.

Keep the one you like the best and sell the other one. :)

Either will work fine for your purposes. I've had both. The Axis is going to be more accurate and just 'easier" in general because it's modern and still in production. It will go bang every time without doubt. The 349 depends on what condition it is in.

If someone handed me either one and told me to go hunting, the deer would die just as fast as if I had paid 3x more for a rifle.

he's only selling one of them, I was leaning towards the 340, I have owned few of each at one time or another, the only up side I can see with the axis is if you loose the mag it's not hard to find another one, 340 comes with rings and the base and the axis just has the bases

The Husqvarna M96 sporters like the 9.3x57 I got from Tradeex awhile back are only around 6.25 lbs. These slim, light rifles carry as well for me as a Model 94 Win carbine & the 9.3x57 is a great round to reload for with jacketed or cast bullets. A Timney trigger and bedding job make for more rewarding shooting. Lot's of scope base & ring options fer these as well as ghost ring peep sights.

I was looking at a 9.3x57, most were not drilled and tapped and have the military style safety, too much money to put a scope on

You can get a used scout or compact under $1k scoped if you shop wise...... and fail to see where you can get the Tikka cheaper nowadays.....
