Looking for Red Dot advice.

Want to pick up a cheaper red dot to put on my Savage A22 (22lr). Red dots never been great for me (stigmatism) so don’t know much of anything about them. BUT I want to set this rifle up for my daughter (6year old) to use as I have it set up with an adjustable Boyd’s stock and can fit her better than my other rifles. Presently rifle has a Vortex DB Tactical on it (moving that to my Cz457) and the crosshair on the scope is confusing to her or just hard to find.

Looking for something basic that is bright enuff for day light shooting. Thinking under $200 as a cost. Bushnell trs 25, Vortex Crossfire, Burris Fast fire, others?

I've got a $40 amazon red/green Reflex-dot that has 4-diff reticles. A 'good-sized screen, much easier to use than a 'tube-type' dot, IMO. Woops, they're $55 now !! I bought it 3-4 Y ago. - https://www.amazon.ca/Feyachi-Refle...id=1687812782&sprefix=red+dot,aps,113&sr=8-10
I prefer the Green 'Circle-dot' one, it gives the Circle for quick acquisition and a dot for POA. It's just on my Savage-64 plinker but still gets ca 1.5" at 25Y - 3-MOA Dots aren't meant to be really accurate when it covers 3/4" and the gun is only good for 1" or so.

This is subjective but for my astigmatism I found the following:

Flaring / Distorted
- Vortex Sparc series
- Vortex CrossFire series
- Sig Romeo 5
- Budget Amazon or Aliexpress red dots - these both have flare, or need to be on-center for sharpness, but they tend to have terrible parallax offset depending on how good your cheek weld is.

Not Flaring and no parallax:
- Holosun anything were good and sharp
- Bushnell Mini Cannon
- Bushnell TRS series
- Vortex Venom reflex
- Not budget: Aimpoint, MeproLight, Eotech don't flare for me and are sharp.

Another option to pursue is a prism dot with etched reticle at 1x. Those apparently work very well for astigmatism. I have not tried a true 1x like a Primary Arms ACSS, but the 1x-1.5x LPVO "red dots" I've tried were sharp for me.

Has your daughter shot irons yet?
I wanted to to put a red dot or a scope on my kids little Savage when she got started but I resisted the urge as I wanted her to learn how to "drive stick" so to speak. Just a thought.
As far as red dots go, vortex and sig are great and work well in that budget. Another, more budget friendly option that works well on rimfire is the Pursuit red dot from Bass Pro/ Cabela's. They go on sale every so often for $75 and come with a low mount but also use the same Aimpoint foot print that is used from the micro's, the vortex crosfire and the sig romeo 5.

I use an el cheapo Tasco red dot on my 10/22 take-down. Works okay for what I use it for. I keep a couple of cheap batteries in the case for when (not if) I forget to turn it off. I use cheap batteries and they seem to last alright. This outfit isn't the one I'll be taking to the Olympics...:p

Look at the bushnell “lil p”. Etched reticle that should work with your astigmatism to sight it in for her - then she can turn on the the red dot and have some fun

I’ve seen sales for $150-$175

Forewarning: the mount heights that come with it are low or 1/3 cowitness. So double check if that will work for your rifle

Hope you find what you’re after

I thought the lil p was discontinued? I have one and wouldn't mind another one in that price range, can you let me know where you've seen lil p with a sale price?

Thanks

I have a cheap Amazon one (Feyachi V30 I think) on a Winchester Wildcat. I didn't have high expectations, but it's still working just fine after a few thousand rounds. Hard to go wrong for the kids.

They were at Dante sports just a year ago. Checked their website but it looks like they’re all gone. Sorry to get your hopes up. I was not aware they got discontinued.

However - east hill outdoors is showing stock still for the lil p, but at quite a bit higher than the price point previously mentioned

Thanks all.

Went to local gun shop and looked at a few. Ended up getting a Bushnell TRS-125. Mounted it to the rifle and got it zeroed. Works well enuff and wasn’t too bad for my eye sight to shoot either. Hoping she likes it.

. I bought one of those, past 25 yards might as well throw rocks.

I'd never tried it past 30 yards, so out of curiosity I did a few groupings with it at 50 yards today. They were all around 3". Not great, but more than good enough for a cheap rifle for the kids.

On my S-64 (Post #3) the 'Dot' is 3-MOA as I said, so expecting better than 'throwing rocks' at 25 is futile unless you do as I do -> I 'hold' POA at 6-o'clock on target so hits are 'above' POA. On the 25 yd target the hits with Vertical bars were Off-Hand Shots, Horiz bars were off a Bench/bag. The 50yd 'First shot' is the High hit, the rest were under 3" - "... Just foolin' around..." YMMV
