I have been playing with my 45-70 a lot lately, and I had the idea to load some short range plinking/small game loads. The 1-18 twist barrel is about the same as a muzzleloading pistol, so I figured a roundball would work well.
I used large pistol primers, 5 gr of Red Dot and a .457 round ball lubed with Lee Alox. The powder is held in place with a disc of newspaper pushed down over the paper, and then the neck is slightly crimped to hold the ball on place. Velocity is probably around 1100 fps.

With about 1400 shots per pound of powder, casting your own balls and a large pistol primer, these loads end up under 20 cents or $4 a box of 20.

This is a perfect load to get someone used to a larger gun without the recoil, plinking out to 100 yds or putting some small game in the pot when you're out hunting for big game.
The target in the pics was two 5 shot groups at 25 yds. The first shot was a bit high then 4 in a group above the bull, then I lowered the sight a bit and fired 5 more. It shoots into about 1 1/2" at 50 yds. I didn't try it at 100 yds yet.

I'm a big fan of loading up/loading down and making anything that goes POW! more versatile, and generally enjoy seeing others do the same.(y)

How loud was the report of these rounds? I realize sound is kinda subjective depending on your hearing though.

I've shot a bit of round ball and find that if you can get it to drop from the mold 5-10 thou larger than groove diameter and then size it down to 1-2 thou over, it's more accurate and easier to seat in the neck since it has a tiny flat.

I also found that I could only use the fastest pistol powders (e.g. Bullseye and Red Dot) or else I'd have occasional hangfires, since upon firing the ball exits the neck and pressures drop like a rock and then go up again when it finally engages with the rifling sometimes 1/4" or farther from the neck and seals the bore.

#0 Buckshot is perfect for the 303 Brit and any 308.

The lee 0.314'' SWC with 3.5gr of bullseye is a winner in 303.
I’ve been casting a Lee .311 FP and powder coating it up to .314 for my .303.
10.4gr of 700x and it shoots 1700fps and exactly to the same sight setting as my 180gr full power loads out to 50yds.

Neck sized for case longevity
Way kinder on the brass too which is big for my No4 as it rips the case head off with full power loads pretty quick.

How’s accuracy, just looking to head shoot some rabbits or grouse from 15-40m and some occasional plinking rounds on steel.

Problem is finding Red dot though. I used to use 11.5grn with SKS 123 out of my 303.

308 I used 12 grns of RD with Berry 150 Berry 150 grn plated and got under 1" at 100.

Butcherbill, from memory, under 50y someting like 1'', fine tuning may be necessary. Be assured to check your provincial laws regarding grouse and rabbit hunt with a centerfire. I know it's dumb but...

Good idea, cheaper than light 146 gr pistol bullets maybe

1951 Ideal loading handbook shows round ball loads for various rounds
labelled as 'small game 25 yd' loads, or 'cellar loads', with Unique, Bullseye or 4759, listed at 950 fps
speeds need to be kept low as the ball doesn't have much contact with the lands, similar weight pistol bullets can be pushed faster

45/70 rnd ball mold 457129, 146 gr
