Cheapest ammo suggestions ???

Hey guys,. I just acquired my first shotgun yesterday and am a little unsure of what would be a decent training round for the money. I prefer to buy in bulk so before I spend some bucks any suggestions as to what I can pick up for practicing and general fun shooting around the farm? I've got a Mossberg 500
 
That's what I was thinking. I've been doing some online searching and came across some exotic rounds from the USA. Any idea if those would even have a chance to clear customs?
 
Wholesale had 20% score slugs and buck but now they are closing I dunno if they will again. Cabelas puts their target load on sale for $60 a case a couple times a year.... Now that Wholesale is closing I dunno if they will do that anymore either LoL. Canadaammo (a site sponsor) used to have the cheapest and best deals (free shipping over $200 as well) on this but I waited 2 years and last time I checked they still had none of the cheap stuff... Might now though..

EDIT: IIRC it was close to Xmas when Cabelas put their target loads on sale last year, they were also handing out giftcards to the first 50 people there to sweeten the deal :)
 
Score target loads are usually pretty reasonable by the case, and good ammo for the money. Stay away from Winchester White Box ammo - the nickle/aluminum bases can jam up the best guns.

For 00 Buck (always fun), it's usually easy to find Federal on sale somewhere, quite often in an ammo can.

Score also makes pretty decent slugs that are a reasonable price.
 
Great responses guys. I picked up some cheap Winchester 2 3/4 short brass for coyotes. Had to go with something until I can make a bulk order. Really itching to give my new Mossberg a go.
 
Hit some gun shows there's almost allways cheep boxes of older boxes that are missing a couple of rounds in them ( a good way to try different loads ) . The old purple paper shells got a smell all there own when fired . SSG`s are the big thumpers so get on your stock before ya squeeze them off !:cheers:
 
Light target loads ain't going to do it for coyotes, but are good for practise.Use them most of the time and save the slugs for end of the day or occasional use
 
I use them for cowboy, and love them. Have you priced shot lately? You still can,t reload them for what you can buy target loads when they are on sale. They are something you play with for the fun of it because they can be finicky to get right, and you need fiber wads because the inside of th brass shells is actually 11 gauge because the brass is thinner than the plastic hulls

I usually have 100lbs or so of shot lying around, and make my own cards (stamped out of cardboard) and wads (stamped from scrap felt, or better, buffalo board from knockdown houses)... You need to get a bit creative on the "roll your own's" and it takes time, but it's a fun side hobby in the winter. Mostly I just use cheap target loads for plinking for volume reasons. I only have a few dozen brass hulls, and sometimes you want to blast through a case or two worth of target loads in an afternoon.
