Hey guys

Looking for some guidance from some CGNers who have experience shipping large parcels internationally.

I’ll be shipping some large parcels since my family and I are moving to Australia.

Any advice on which companies to look into for this would be appreciated.

Thanks
Ben

I hate to say this but Canada Post. We have shipped quite a number of our presses down under and CP has been the least expensive. Shipping a 40lb box that is 12x12x24 with insurance runs about $150.00. it takes a couple of months to get there however.

I’ve taken a look at container prices and they are much more than I am willing to spend...around 3000-5000 depending on company. The amount of stuff we will be needing to ship wil not require a container as we do own property in Australia that is furnished. It’s been a second home for the past few years so we are basically moving the essentials down that can fit into 2-4 boxes that will be shipped.

honestly, as much as you may hate CP, they are the cheapest option if you have to mail them out within Canada.

However, if you can carry those parcels to the state, USPS will have a much lower rate than CP.

Yes I’ve heard USPS is great for pricing. Unfortunately we won’t be passing through the states enroute so that is not an option. We will be taking the majority of our belongings with us as checked baggage, but there will surely be more items that need to be shipped either shortly after departure or later on.

I’ve done a few rate calculations using the Canada post app and the prices have been higher than I thought....this may be because of the size of the suitcases/boxes we will be shipping the items in. Prices are ranging from 400-600

If you're moving household stuff, in general the best rate will be groupage in a sea can. I've been out of the business for several years, but it's unlikely to have changed.

So if I were to go the shipping container route what company should I look into.

Also I’ll be eventually shipping firearms down once everything’s sorted on that end...would rather ship them via air than water....

Regardless in need of some companies suggestions to look into....shipping container or otherwise.

I shipped to Mexico and back with Movers International - first time was a full house move, second time a shared small container for a short project. Third time half a dozen boxes to/from Chile. It's great when the Company is picking up the tab ... other moving outfits may be an option.

Umm,

DHL?

Also, read the insurance fine print extremely carefully with any international option you get!

Can you Kondo a couple of things? Might seem weird, but the less things you have to ship, the less things you have to ship ;)

Canada post as other have said is a good option. You could send it as consolidated ocean freight shipping (LCL = Less than container load) but is won't be cheap either. Upon arrival and in addition to the actual freight costs, you will need to pay local terminal and handling fees. Then there's Customs. Not too sure of the rules in Australia; however, in Canada there are provisions for duty-free entry for landed immigrants or a temporary import bond (deposit requirements).

So, there's lots of companies who offer LCL ocean freight shipping: DHL Global Forwarding, Kuehne & Nagel, and a ####-load of other people wiling to take your money:

Best of luck

Canada Post is a cheap option. You can also talk a freight forwarder like Kuehne & Nagel, Nippon Express, Farrow Ltd (formerly Russel A Farrow), etc.
There are LCL options where you combine your contents with that of others going to Australia.

I think my plan is to go through a shipping company out of Montreal right now....they’re charging me 575.00 Canadian dollars for 1 cubic meter or 150kg.

This shipment will be all personal belongings and some reloading gear...no components.

Firearms and optics are going to be shipped at a later date once I am fully setup for firearm ownership in NSW.

Question for some CGN’ers here though...any export regulations on firearms out of Canada?
