Cheapest kind of ammo?

Is there a reason the bigger round is less?

308 is the bigger round....
The reason 7.62x39 is so cheap is that it was MAS produced by the billions of rounds, on a budget in China 20+ years ago.

The cases are steel NOT the more expensive brass.
The jackets are steel with .001" copper plating Not the expensive solid copper jacket
The powder is a single base mas produced Chinese military grade powder. Not a double base proprietary quality controlled powder.
The rounds were thrown together as fast as possible in china, Not precision made in America.

The newer non-corrosive 7.62x39 from China and Russia is great for plinking. MOA at 100m.

Which ammo do you think I should start off with or which rifle I should say.

XCR 7.62 or m14 308. I think it comes in 223 also Ignore post before this

Seconding the SKS option. Cheap, functional, well built rifle that's accurate enough in a caliber that's extremely cost effective. Just be sure to clean properly after shooting corrosive surplus.

I've put thousands upon thousands of rounds through my five SKS's with no failures at all. Probably the cheapest fun you can have in shooting outside of rimfire. That is, if you're set on getting a centefire rifle for your first gun. If not, I'd recommend a .22 of some flavour. You could even get a Chinese SKS with whatever .22 you choose, they're only $199 at the most and $169 or so at the lowest.
