I'm looking for a good 1-4x, but they all seem uber-military oriented and are thusly overbuilt/bomb-proof. I just want a hunting grade optic that's not total trash... Do I have any options?

I think your best bet would be the Mueller Speed Shot 1-4×24 for $250. The illumination is daylight visible and also has a lifetime warranty. Dollar for dollar Mueller makes some great scopes. JMHO.

i am also in the market for a 1-4x scope and ive narrowed it down to either the millet dms or the mueller speed shot. i see that the mueller still has a visible dot with the illumination turned off, does anyone know if the millet reticle is still visable without the having to have it illuminated? thanks. oh and any site sponsors you know of dealling in mueller?

I kinda changed my mind on the 1-4x thing and decided to go with a Redfield 2-7x33mm. I hear they're great optics, and I like the idea of having a little more magnification.

This is for my Mini-14, which will be my SHTF gun. I have Warne quick detatch rings coming from Brownells, so I can remove the optic and use irons if I need to. Should be a neat setup when I get it put together. Might need a Kydex cheek piece...

Bushnell Trophy and Legend series are as cheap as I go ($100 - $150).
A very small amount of peripheral distortion but 95% of the sight picture is crystal clear.
I own about 6 2-7x33mm Leupold Rifleman scopes that I use on my hunting guns but Rifleman will run you around $250.
Had some bad experiences with the Bushnell Banners and I wouldn't touch Simmons or Tasco with a 10' pole.
Threw a Tasco on a .30-06 Ruger 77 and didn't get a box of ammo down range before the sight picture went berserk and there was a part rattling around inside the tube.
Good thing it was a Crappy Tire purchase (back when CT carried lots of guns and accessories) and I had no hassle getting my money back.
Can't expect quality for $49.95. ;)

Redfield optic is a very good choice, in that price range, i dont think you can get better... JP.

Redfields are Leupolds cheap line of scope.
I own 1 and it is a very good scope with clear optics though more expensive than the Bushnell Trophy and Legend series.

So you think I'll like mine?

How do you like your 2-7x's? You must like em, you have a lot of them!

I think it will top my Mini-14 off nicely. And the quick release rings will be fun to work with,as they say a SHTF gun shouldn't rely on optics...
Looking forward to my Redfield.

Weaver makes a nice little 1-3x20 with matte finish. It's small, light, bright and dependable. I have one here on a 308 Carbine.
