cheapest powder

Powders Blue dot & red dot.

Blue dot & red dot powder are one of the most versatile powders you can buy.For about $26.00 a pound. You can load shotgun shells & most handgun ammo with these powders. I been useing these powders for over 12 years now, with out any problems.:sniper::wave:

If you are really looking for cheapest you should look at the recommended charge weight. The last post recommended blue dot and red dot. My lee manual recommends a starting load of 8.5 grains for blue dot and 4 grains for red dot. So even if the price per lb is the same blue dot would cost over twice as much to shoot red dot. Slower burning powder give you more velocity at a safe pressure than a faster burning powder at the price of more powder.

Use Tightgroup, good for all but the heaviest loads in those calibers. The powder costs are actually trivial compared to the cost of bullets, even lead bullets. (The following figures are not necessarily for you but others that might read this thread)

Say 2 lb of Tightgroup = $38 (from Higginson)

Average load for all your calibers = 4.0gr (not max loads)

Total number of loads = 3,500
Cost per round = 1.1 cents.

A plated lead bullet will cost you 8 to 12 cents per round
Primer about 2.5 cents per round.

Blue dot is mostly for magnum loads.
Red dot is for 9mm > 3.8 grains for 124 grains FMJ or lead bullets.
38spl > 2.8 grains for 148 grains lead wade cutter bullets, 3.3 grains for 158 FMJ bullets & 3.0 grains for 158 grains lead bullets. 45acp > 4.0 grains for 185grains for FMJ bullets, 4.5 grains for 200 grains FMJ & lead bullets. Make a note that these are minium loads. Hope you enjoy your quest in reloading.

And if you are really a cheapskate:) you can cast your own. I pay about 5 bucks for about 150 lbs of wheelweights from a tire store which makes about 3000 or so bullets.
