You're wise to check into ammo prices first. There's not a lot of cheap, reasonably accurate ammo around any more. You can find 308 milsurp for around $7-$8 a box at gun shows, but you may find it not as accurate as you'd like. You can buy Federal Power Shok 308 180's for around $14.00 a box new. About the best I can find on an accurate 223 is the Winchester White box 45 gr Varmint ammo that when its available, is around $18.00 a box of 40 rds.

I think your best best in new manufactured, reasonably accurate ammo will be the 223. You could check some of our sponsors like Wolverine for their price on 500 or 1000 rounds.

I can reload .223 for about 20 cents a round, maybe a bit less. This of course does not include the initial price of buying the brass but it's cheap and easy to find. With such a cheapy reload I'm always getting less then 2" groups of five at 100 yards with a 12FVSS and a 15x Bushnell on top shooting from bags on a bench.

With the all the same component and a better bullet (5 cents more expensive per round I suspect) I consistently get 1/2" groups of 5 at 100 yards, definitely worth that 5 cents if you're shooting targets ;)
