Hey,

This week I purchased my first gun, a Ruger 10/22 carbine. I'd like to purchase a few thousand rounds. I'm not terribly concerned with brand. Would I be better off buying ammo online or in store? What should I expect to pay in Canada for cheap .22lr ammo?

Is ammo something that we can buy across the border and bring back? I frequently make trips across the border to pick up Amazon shipments.

Last thing.. if I order parts from the US such as tech sights, tapco stock.. I read that if the part is less than $100 that its ok. Would I need a special form or anything, or just my PAL?

Thanks in advance.

Some 10/22 rifles are fussy about the brand so get a few boxes by different brands to firstly see which works best in it.

I found CCI Blasers to do very well in my one factory barreled 10/22 but you might find America Eagle or some other works for yours.

The lower cost bulk ammo can get things gunked up fast so count on cleaning at least the chamber, magazine and action after 200 to 300 rounds or so.

My 10/22 seems to shoot pretty much anything. I tend to use federal "525" or CCI mini mags. A box of federal 525 is only around $25 at any local gun store so there is not much to be saved buying online. I see that they are on backorder at cabelas right now, but you can get 2100 rounds and an ammo can for $89. http://www.cabelas.ca/index.cfm?pageID=71&&section=1187&section2=1280&section3=1483&ID=38647

As for shipping from the USA: American stores can't ship "Items required for operation" valued over $500 to Canada ($100 to other countries) no forms required, finished receivers cannot be shipped as the are considered a firearm, and unfortunately a lot of US retailers don't ship to Canada because they just don't want the headache of figuring out what they can and can't ship or integrating that information into their shopping cart system.

You can bring ammo IN to Canada. You just can't take it OUT of the US of A legally, without an export permit.

Unless you are really ready to swear off trips to the US, as in, ready to be on the "no Admission" list, skip the ammo buying down there. Read the import/export stuff in the legalese and ammo Forums.

Check yer local WalMart. 22 ammo is pretty lightweight, but the postage is still gonna eat a LOT of ammo worth of buying power. Buy local or spend a bunch and stock up when you are somewhere that is cheaper, and where you won't run afoul of the US Homeland Security laws.

Cheers
Trev
