Check this bad boy for sale! WW2

Hard to believe this stuff still sits around in some junk yard waiting to be re-claimed and restore to their former glory.

I'd love to come across a Sd. kfz 251 Halftrack and restore it and take it for a spin but that is me.

A lot of old tanks got turned into platforms for drilling rigs for blasting operations, and are still in use today.

I've worked for two companies that had them, as a helper, and changed drill steel on them. They are plush to work on compared to an airtrac 123.

My uncle had one of these, up behind the barn on his farm. It was always covered over with a tarp, and looked to be in really good shape, and was working. That was in the mid-sixties. After he passed away, my aunt sold the farm. Don't know what happened to the Carrier; and there's no one left now to ask. As it never showed up anywhere since, I suspect the new owners junked it. Pity.

Btw the brakes, clutch linkage & engine are probably all seized. Anybody considering this had better have a serious trailer & winch.

One can always pull the axle shafts to roll it up onto a trailer. I use a 1-1/2 ton chain hoist to winch onto the trailerwhen I am recovering vehicles like this. The carriers are around 8,000 lbs loaded and with armor, so this one is likely in the 5 or 6 thousand pound range.

If I wasn't overseas, I would buy it just for the track and road wheels. It won't be around long at that price. Engine is out of a 49 or later Ford, and it takes a fair bit of luck to find front armor for one these days.

Here is mine, still under progress:

I knew of four of these Universal Carriers sitting in the bush. As I understand, many were sold off after the war to guys who brought them up to huntcamps for logging. Seems like a great idea to have a tracked vehicle but the tracks are faily narrow and they get bellied in the mud faily easy. Wherever they died is usualy where they are found. Not easy to extract cos they weigh around four tons.

Some guy from Toronto has been traveling around all the local scrap yards buying them up. The four in the bush have now gone.

Neat little vehicles but tend to leave bruises on the passengers, not much upholstery!

Local Legion has one that is a runner and has been used in parades. It sits outside the Legion on display, sadly in the elements which is taking its toll.

It looks like it got a lot of the bits and pieces, so it's worth it for that alone. You could fake the armour with regular steel plate, or you could build a vis-mod Vickers Light Tank Mk II
