A friend of mine just picked this up. It is an Accuracy International 338 Lapua Magnum 1-11 twist fitted with a Nightforce 5.5x22x56mm scope.

We are just in the process of starting to reload for it. He is planing to shoot 250gr HPBT Match Sierra's Retumbo powder & 215F Match primers. Lapua brass will be used also. Looking for a starting point from Lapua shooters here.

This is not my personal cup of tea, but my buddy sure has a chub for it. What do you guys think?

I'm an F-Class shooter, not a sniper, so it's not my thing.

They make a nice rifle for their intended purpose (One of the best I think), but for the price you could have two and possibly three custom guns built with top-of-the-line components (including the excellent AI magazine system) built that will meet or exceed the accuracy of the AI. These guns have some very nice features, but I would never spend the coin that these go for. - my opinion.

Nice! I have a TRG 42 with USO T-Pal on top. If I were shopping today I'd be very interested in the Dakota Longbow or Scimitar, if you could get one.

Regarding customs, How well do they hold their value? Not so good from what I hear.

I'm with you, glad it wasn't my coin. I just am helping with the loading because he has recently moved & does not have his reloading bench set up yet. It is a very sweet rig, but BIG $.

I thought the mount was from Smidt & Bender, it is the same as the mount on my 4-16X PM-II. I just checked with AI's web page and didn't see any options for mounts other than for the choice of a rail.

Looks nice, but

It's a fantastic looking piece. Same sort of bi pod i have on the 50.
It's got the night force similar to mine and the stock my buddy has on his .308.
Although the stock if functional and solid as a tank i've never found them to be comfortable to shoot (just me). I think Andy's got $1000 into the stock.

As for Ian's comment I feel the same. As an F-class shooter I've got no use (match wise) for anything with a Brake on it, don't find the stock comfortable and like he said build AT LEAST 1.5 top notch shooters with the funding needed for that one.

It is a really nice looking rig ,,,,, just not what I need/want.

And , double check this but I think a 300 gr. bullet in front of 89.9 gr. of Reloader 22 works...... That sounds familiar to my buddy's load ( he went custom through Robertsons) that shoots dynamite.

M.

US869 seems to work very well with the 300gr, H1000, RL22, etc for the 250gr.

That gun is first class and likely one of, if not the most durable fieldable sniper system out there right now. That is what your paying for. Very nice!

I have a Sako TRG-42 and agree with Peter Dobson it shoots great with the Lapua 250g Scenars and Retumbo so give him a call and order some.

Ahhh, the AWM... Congrats to your friend for getting the "real deal" instead of the usual 700 action dropped into an AICS

Although some here are "criticizing" it for not being as accurate as an F-Class rifle, I'd like to see them put their F-Class rifles through the kind of abuse this thing can take and still maintain POI like it can... Not to mention the ability to strip it and put it back together whilst again maintaining POI. Just go to Google Video and search for "Accuracy International" and you'll find two longer vids that show this.

If he went with the AI scope mount (it's not made by S&B), I wonder why he just didn't put it right on the receiver's dovetail mount vs. adding that rail?? At any rate, if it wasn't for the rifle I already own, I would have probably gone with an AW (in .308, though).

Have fun with it and take some target snapshots!!!

The advantage with the rail mount over the dovetail is that you can throw on things like the level and angel co sign indicator with ease. Other than that, your right, both very solid mounting options.

Take care
