O.K. sorry for the stupid question, I can't remember the correct term for the style of grip and forend finish that is used instead of checkering, its almost like its beaten in ( with care and attention of course). Hopefully someone knows what i'm taking about.

Thanks

Strippling or some such.....Euros use it instead of checkering....easier to apply, don't need a whole lot of practice like checkering.

There is also another method that can give truly nice results. Cut out a design you like from a taped area and sandblast the area you want roughed up. I've seen a couple of rifle stocks done this way and they look great and are very functional as well. The two I had a close look at were done after the stocks were finished and the raised parts left behind were finished exactly like the rest of the smooth areas of the stocks. bearhunter

how to do stippling!!!

the key to stippling lies in the fiber of the wood being broken-- not just dented.Denting wont produce a lasting stippling effect.

stippling technique:First , you must rigidly control the stock so that it does't slip when you strike it with the stippling tool.Firmly rest the heel of your hand on the stock and hold the tool approx 1/32 inch above the surface.Grasp the tool firmly with your thumb, index and middle finger. with your other hand hold a lightweight hammerand apply quick light strikes on the top .ideally the tool then rebounds to the original height.

very important to keep this rebounding effect as constant and uniform as possible.

practice on a old stock and then give me some feedback ill give tip #2
