I have looked at the Canadian Chesapeake bay retriever club abd they only list about 6-7 breeders and I have tried them, but was wondering if anyone knows of others for a family and hunting dog ?
Friends used to have several hunting Chesapeakes. They were from champion hunting lineage and not suitable as pets. Much too thick headed.
As you are aware, they were originally bred to retrieve ducks and drop in their pile on the shoreline and repeat this all day with basically no commands/interaction from their hunters. They are also VERY protective of their pile of birds.
I am sure there are breeders who also have "toned down" versions that would make a better family dog. If you are looking for a high performance Chese, be careful what you wish for...
I have a 12 1/2 year old Chese. They are great hunting dogs and with proper trainning, a great family dog. I got my dog from Beartown Kennels in Quebec, Southeast of Montreal. Norm and Adrian have been at this for a long, long time. Scotch has hunted on average 350 birds a year with a high of 895 during year 3 and a low of 335 two years ago when I retired him. He was taught not to be aggressive and for that he got beat up three times by the new dog. The new dog has learned his lesson and is no longer trying to be the Alpha male. I AM THE ALPHA MALE!
I have been around a few Chessies at home and a field , and if trained right are a great family dog if bought from the right breeder. I was hoping to get an offsring of my friends old dog but the ##### they were going to use is barren (SP?) The wife wants a dog soon to replace our dog that died last Dec.
I saw Beartowns site, but was hoping to keep it closer. They look like great breeders.
