Having never owned a handgun, I'm considering starting with a very basic Chiappa 1873 - 22. Any owners out there with comments?
Thanks

Thanks to the experience I've had with a Chiappa firearm and those of a couple of others in the group I shoot with I'd strongly suggest that you consider the Pietta rimfire 1873 from Marstar instead. The odds are good that you'll get a better made gun that is more durable over the long haul.

Pietta is a better choice but depends on your budget. A dedicated .22lr and not the .22mag would be my preference for best accuracy. The ever so slightly larger bore that the mag ammo needs does affect accuracy and for plinking who needs the magnum. This I discovered with a Ruger SAA. the 22 mag sure is loud though with an impressive flame.

Thanks for the info. Our local dealer stocks the Chiappa, making it easier to acquire. At $230.00, I'm willing to take a chance on it.

I have one, and it regularly makes it to the range over some better quality .22 pistols. Its function is fine, and reasonably accurate. I love shooting it. The finish is rough, appears spray painted as opposed to proper blueing. I have not used the magnum cylinder.
All that being said, after my initial frenzy of buying entry level pistols, I am slowly weeding them out and replacing with quality. But for $230, why not?
If you are in S Ontario, PM me and you can try mine.

I recently purchased a Pietta 1873 in .22LR from Prophet River. They have the Chiappas as well, and for cheaper. However, even based on the photos I could tell the Pietta was better made. Even if the Chiappa requires some filing, or the finish is rough, for around $200 it's probably worthwhile.
