Hello fellow CGN'ers,

I've been interested in a .22LR/.410 combo gun for a while now. I've seen, as the title says, a Chiappa DB and the Savage 42. Does anyone here have experience with one or the other or even both? What do you think of them? Pros/cons? I will be using it for grouse up in northern Ontario and for small game closer to home. Your opinions are greatly appreciated. If you have any other makes/models that I should look at that would also be a welcomed addition.

Thanks in advance,

J

I have the Chiappa DB and like it, but haven't shot any game with it yet. It's small, and folds pretty much in half. The sights are good and I like the wood more than the plastic of the Savage. I also like the double triggers, but am used to shooting a double trigger shotgun, so others may not feel the same. Also, the wood/metal fit is pretty rough. My first DB had a faulty extractor (wouldn't work at all) so I returned it and got a replacement. Shotgun has good pattern at 25 yards, but out of the box the .22 shot about 6 inches high and right. No problem to sort that out. It's going to be my truck/grouse gun this fall and I do recommend it. Seems to be cheaper than the Savage as well

I have used a pre 1964 (no serial #) Savage 22/410 for years. Very solid gun. No experience with the new plastic ones functionally but don't like the look of them.

I bought a gently used 42 and quite like it. Its no beauty queen but it is the perfect quad gun as you can thunk it around and not worry about it. I may give it a facelift with some tan Krylon Fusion. The sights are poorazz so I added an EGW rail and a red dot which works very well for both barrels at 25 yds. I wouldn't pony up for one at the new price but would by the Chiappa new.

I've owned both and sold the 42 and kept the Double Badger. I liked both but the sights and extractors on the badger along with it being able to fold in half made me like it a bit more than the 42.

I was leaning towards the Chiappa because of the fold in half ability. I think that's what I'll end up going with. Now to find it for as inexpensive as possible.
