Went shooting with the wife yesterday, and she's decided that she wants her own .22 pistol. After a couple hours of interweb searching, she wants a Chiappa m9-22, or a gsg 1911 as a second choice. I've heard good things about the gsg, but know nothing about the Chiappa. Any experiences?

The Chiappa and GSG both shoot ok but they are substandard in quality compared to most other 22's as they are made with cheap metal, the GSG has a slight edge over the Chiappa but if you are looking for. 22 for casual plinking then they will do fine but why not just get the Norinco, it's even cheaper and shoots just as good.

The fit and finish of the GSG is far superior to the Chiappa. The mags are also nicer with the GSG so the quality extends to more than just the gun itself.

I've held and shot both and neither were mine so I feel pretty unbiased.

I'm not a fan of the heavy handed engraving on the GSG but it's a small price to pay for the nicer mechanical fit and function.

Show her pictures of the Browning Buckmark. If she likes it OK one of those would be a lifetime investment. The price on the lower end models isn't much different from the GSG but it comes with a proven long term track record.

It's quite possible that the GSG will earn it's long term record in time. Other alloy .22's have done well. Case in point is the Henry lever rifle with the Zamack or similar receiver. Lots of the early ones are still shooting well and feel as smooth or smoother than when new. So I would not let the use of the alloy on these guns put you off if the 1911 planform is what she likes.

I watched a YouTube vid on the Chiappa and wasn't impressed. I think I have her convinced to go with the gsg. She doesn't like the look of the buck arm or the ruger's, so its either going to be the Browning 1911-22 or the gsg. I'm cheap, so I'll be nudging her towards the gsg.

Did you show her the Browning 1911 22LR.

A petite piece for a petite shooter. Lots of good reviews.

Not for me (I'll stick with my GSG), but a better bet than the Chiappa.
