So I go for a drive out of town, and while I'm out of town, I like to stop at my favorite fishing and sporting goods store, Gone Fishing, to restock and things such as ammo, cleaning patches, cleaning chemicals and oil. I have this very bad.... good.... bad.... maybe good? habit of checking out what they've got on the shelf before buying what I originally came for. I happen to notice a Tavor on the shelf but on the opposite side, so I circle around and bamm! There is it, a Type 97. omg omg omg omg, little kid in a candy store. Long story short, that Type 97 came home with me and I didn't get what I originally came for.

Here it is, with a long mag and short mag. What do you guys think looks better? Long or short? I kind of like it better with the short mag. The rifle in pictures is very deceiving. You look at it and think its going to be this light, ####ty, chinese made sporting rifle but when you pick it up, holy crap its got weight to it. The polymer is thick and nothing is loose. It just feels like a well built sold piece. I have heard everyone is complaining about the location of the mag release but like the guy at Gone Fishing told me, just use your right hand to change mags. Its actually not that hard at all if you tilt the rifle and use your right hand. Guess you got to be somewhat adaptive with this rifle.

The rifle is a lot smaller than I though it was going to be. I knew it was going to be small but not like briefcase small. Here is a picture of the Type 97 with a 5.56 Vz 58.

Does anyone else hear propaganda coming from your Type 97? I'm hearing things like, "You will help build China's Empire." and "You fight for China."

Can't wait to try it out. Probably next week. Until then, I'll continue listening to its propaganda, read the broken English instructions manual, and eat Chinese braised beef brisket.

I don't think China is being 'generous'... Canadians are paying good $ to buy the T97...

I really really like my T97, zero issues so far & so compact! It is currently getting more use than my Tavor!!!

And, every time I shoot the T97 I imagine it chucking the brass back to China! HA HA, yes it tosses the brass THAT FAR!

Cheers
Jay

Its actually a quote from a game I use to play a long time ago. Thought it would be funny for those who knew where the quote comes from. Bit of an inside joke.

Well I think I am allowed to criticize the t97 as I own one and many other norinco guns.

I think at the price point its a good buy, it has alot of things going for it! But to say it feels hefty and the polimer feels solid absolutely not!

I had a norc m14 blow up and the barrel harpooned 15 yard on me after Ĺ• roumds new from the box; I will be tentative shooting my first rounds true the t97 tomorrow. If ever there is a catastrophic failure with thos bullpup rifle there is NO protection at all for the shooters face like my rfb does and I will add tha the t97 feels like a airsoft compare to my rfb.

But for the price its probably going to be a keeper!

Do you really own one? The gun weights 3.9kgs...... That's 8.5lbs. Its heavier than my Vz 58. The polymer isn't loose at all. Its tight and doesn't flex. I also have a M305 and the quality of the Type 97 vs the M305 is night and day difference.

Yes I do have one, I bought it from sfrc on there new years eve special. I didn't go to the range since. I am supposed to go tomorrow. It does feel lighter then my scoped rfb. If I remember correctly I could get quite a bit of flex from the polymer. Hey polymer is the new wood so its not like I never seen or use polimer its fine for everyday usage ; its just that I hope the gun never fail ie. Explode wen I am shooting it!

If the chamber ruptured of a 308 fired in the fedding path of my rfb, I'd be like ho!!$ s#!t . But if the same happened with my t97 id be knocked unconscious or dead.

I can't wait to shoot it tomorrow , I hope its reliable as it replaced mini 14 that had sporadic fte. If its 100% I will be installing a t97.ca ftu this summer.

I didnt find that.
My experience was all brass in a fairly tight area about 15-20 to the forward right. About 2 o'clock position.
Each case had a slight dent about half way down the side.
Same experience from two guns.

Well it was cold has hell I only got of 10 rounds true mine. Tapco = no go d&h work fine. Its a fun little gun. Wen its get warmer il put it true its paces, I had my m14 and rfb to sight in and a m38 to shoot my first round true

This is my favorite description of the t97 so far.

You think it's going to be a light, ####ty chinese sporting rifle. Then you get one and discover, "wait...this isn't light."

Too funny mis,... that post was waiting to be violated.

Mumbles congrats on your new rifle, if it's half as good as the CQa I had, or the M14S I still have,... it will serve you fine. Good luck and good shooting. RTS.

I was surprised when I handled it for the first time. Felt very solid, even if the grip was a tad bit to small for my hand. With a t97.ca flat top upper and a few other minor tweaks it is a very good gun for the money. Enjoy!
