So I picked up this SKS today. The previous owner said that it would only fire a single shot and not cycle. I took that gas tube out and I noticed a few things.

1. The gastube had a mount come with it that mounted to the top of the tube. It was drilled and tapped in 4 places as seen in pics. I was wondering if this could effect the cycling as the gases would escape from the holes not creating enough pressure to cycle the action.

2. The inside of the gastube had some heavy surface rust. I grabbed a drill and some bore brushes and cleaned it out the best I could. I noticed there are some heavy grooves from ???? and was wondering if this could create drag with the gas piston. Pics show.

3. The gas piston has some slight surface rust on the outside. Dont think that could do much but not sure.

What do you guys think? Any ideas?

The holes drilled are not the problem here, the roughness of the gas tube may be the culprit. Did you fire the rifle after cleaning the gas tube to see if it function properly? If it doesn't, a new gas tube will fix the issue.

As far as I can see, this is the NcSTAR SKS Rifle Gas Tube with removed Weaver Rail Mount. Quality of the product is not very good itself plus holes from removed screws are adding some odds to the tube. There was the best advice to you in the comment above to purchase an original chinese SKS gas tube from Lever Arms - problem solved. Perfect matsh, no rust, cycle is back, originality is restored.
Good luck.

If the holes are in the gas tube itself, how could that not be part of the cause? Can you see gas escaping when you fire a round?
We can see on the pic that the holes are drilled in the section were the small part of the gas piston is, no gas reach that far. If rifle still dont work, a original chinese gas tube will fix the issue.
