what are the major differences? i've always wanted an Russian SKS but im about to trade one of my pistol for a chinese SKS with Gunbuny here. every one says russian made ones are better, well i dont doubt that but how much better? better metal ? better finishing? more durable? fill me in.

The Chinese vary so much it is hard to say. On a whole the Russians have better fit and finish, are in better shape, and are tighter. The wood is better on the SKS 45 also. The pre 1970 Factory 26 built Chi-Coms are the best of the Chinese, with the first year Sino-Soviets at the top. Then comes any of the models made for Military at other Factories. The Norinco marketed Civilians are on the bottom of the list. But even these can be good rifles, some just don't inspire confidence in the manufacturing process. They all seem to shoot though,no matter how they look,or feel. Just as long as the loseness and rattle does'nt bother you.

As Woodbeef stated, the Chinese SKS's are extremely variable. I have had Chinese rifles vary from "looks like built by someone on acid and in a hurry" to my current Chinese SKS that rivals my best Russian "unissued" SKS rifles for blueing, fit and accuracy. Chinese SKS rifles also vary in accuracy, have had ones that patterned 5 shots in a 12" pattern at 100 meters to tack drivers (as far as the SKS design can get) which shot 3" groups at 100 meters. The Russian SKS rifles seem to be solid 4-5 MOA shooters, which is right in line with the accuracy requirements of the Red Army at the time.

s**t, i'll just buy a Russian one too from lever arms. only 200 bucks. that's only ammo money!

i have no clue what type he is selling ,but it's got some neat after market parts such as stock and scope, i could use those on a russian one im about to buy this week. maybe i could do a review on accurcy and built quality on them. ha

That's what I figured too. I've still got a norinco and an Russian that I've kept. I had to make some room in the vault.
I actually prefer them over anything else for the pure fun factor and the utility of the guns.

Chinese SKS rifles are good and even when they look like crap, they still function quite reliably. I would recommend one to anyone. That said, I would still want a Russian SKS if I had to choose between the two.

I have a Chinese SKS that has the worst paint job I've seen on any firearm, but functions flawlessly. All the metal on it is nicely finished and fit is satisfactory. The trigger is a bit gritty, but does not impede with good operation. I have enough confidence in her, that she's become my spare deer rifle.

My take with the SKS is, that the best thing you can do is have a bunch in front of you and hand-pick the one you like. That's what I did and although I paid a little over-price back then, I didn't get stuck with a POS parts bin rifle that had jams caused by rust or something to that effect...

Friends of mine have Chinese SKS both fixed and detachable mag.
I just got a russian sks, recent batch of rearsenals that came in.

My opinion is
The bayonet on the russian is a bit annoying.
I think my russian shoots a bit better.
The detachable mags are kinda flaky, the stripper clips are much nicer to use

I have a number of each. Wood on Chinese is the pits. So far, my best shooter is a crappy Norinco.

If someone is selling a Norinco and says it is a good shooter, do not hesitate. If biying blind, buy a Russian refurb.

just picked up a Russian one. seems to be a nice one. all number match besides the force match stock and mag cover which been welded so doesnt matter anyways. no painted parts.got to say the machining on it is better than my Norc but need to take them to the range to find out which one shoots better.
