My understanding is that shooting shot from a rifled barrel makes a crappy pattern. If you had a removable choke on the end of your barrel could would that fix the issue? Having a .454 Casal rifle that you could use as a .410 could be handy if it shot well as a .410.

I'm sure that I recall some sort of pistol or survival style gun that had a muzzle device for shooting 410 or shot capsules out of a rifles barrel. Damned if I can remember what it was.... Contender maybe?

410 doesn’t shoot well period.

Before heads explode I recognize the accomplishments of those That have shot 100 straight at skeet 30-40 years ago with a 410.

For shooting birds in the take off position patterns won’t mean much.

The Germans tried to use "squeeze bore" anti-tank guns in the 30s and early WW2. They were moderately successful at improving accuracy by taking the sloppiness out of the bores, but not very effective as good barrels.

I used to use alot of shot shells in my 22lr. If you aimed 4"/6" off to a side itd kill sparrows in barns and not go thru the steel roof. Shot a rat once with it and it growled at me and ran away. Patterns become like a big circle. Same with buckshot from a rifled 12 ga barrel. My mossberg 12 ga rifled barrel at 10 yards 3 shots of 00 buck not a single pellet hit a 45 gallon drum i was aiming at.
I cant see any type of shot patterning decent from a rifled barrel
Cci has the blue plastic shot caps which help alot. Both rimfire and pistol loads.

The dual purpose pistols like the taurus judge have striaght rifling. They need to be rifled as to not be classed short barreled shotgun. Ive seen great results from them in 410 and 45 colt

Some turkey chokes are straight rifled as well

Can confirm. Did the same thing on a stove box. 12 yards, one pellet in the top right corner, one in the bottom left. (Buckshot)

Hi,
The Thompson-Center Contender was produced in 45 Long Colt, and was capable of shooting .410 if I recall correctly.
I believe that there was also a choke-tube/muzzle-brake that was supposed to be removed when firing 45LC.
We shot the .410 a lot, including attempts at flying birds & clays to no memorable success. Rattle-snakes at 3m, or less, were toast.
Commercially loaded shot-capsules in pistol calibers were also available, and were fired in rifled pistol barrels. They might, or might not, make a decent pattern on paper at very short distances, but were notably LESS effective on Rattle-snakes at the 3m distance than the TC Contender in .410.
My suggestion is that if you want shotgun performance, use a shotgun.

A little pre-coffee morning math:

454 casull twist rate: 1:24
Barrel length: 22”
.410 speed: 1800fps

So the load is rotating at one full turn every 2 feet. At 1800 feet per second, that’s 900 rotations per second, or 54,000 rpm. Max speed on a router is around 24,000 rpm.

So consider, when the shot cup leaves the barrel, what kind of outward force is pulling on the shot in every direction except where you’re aiming.
