choke tubes and slugs

This is a newby question as I am a newby

I have a rem 870 and a modifide choke that came with the gun. is it safe to shoot rifled slugs with the choke tube in? I was told it was fine but in my mind any thing reducing the bore would be a bad thing...

and is this choke ok for shooting clays just for fun?
 
I'm not much of an expert myself, but...

-modified choke tubes are fine to shoot rifled slugs out of (the rifling allows the slug to constrict as it passes through the choke) but you may find they are a bit more accurate with an Improved Cylinder choke

and

-a modified choke is a little tight for close range clay shooting (like trap) but ok for longer range clay shooting (like skeet)

the mod. choke tube is fine for slugs. you can also get a rifled screw in tube for sabot slugs, which is probably your best bet.if not the mod. smooth choke must use rifles slugs. the last time i shot clays, skeet was closer than trap. your mod. is okay for trap but you might want to invest in a skeetII screw in tube for shooting skeet.the skeetII tube is choked between modified and improved cylinder.
 
Modified choke is fine for RIFLED SLUGS the ones that are all lead.Modified choke is fine for skeet or clays or whatever just balance the tighter choke out by using smaller shot say 9's instead of 71/2's for the closer ranges.

Other way 'round. Trap is a longer distance game. Modified choke and up. Skeet is closer range. Nothing tighter than improved cylinder.

Sporting clays presentations vary from in your face to way the heck out there.
 
"Rifled Slugs" of the Forrester-type are designed to safely pass through a smooth-bored shotgun with Full Choke. Generally speaking, they tend to be more accurate when used with less choke, like Cylinder or Improved Cylinder.

Trap chokes: Modified, Improved Modified or Full.

Skeet chokes: Cylinder, Skeet.

Sporting Clays/5-Stand: Most find Improved Cylinder, Light Modified or Modified preferable.

Game: Everything from Cylinder to Extra-full depending on application.
Steel shot is not recommended for anything tighter than Modified ... and often performs better with Improved Cylinder.

The standard range of Remington chokes are cheap enough at about $ 25 each. Be like the rest of us BUY 'EM ALL !!!! ( and pattern your gun with each to learn what they do .... and don't ! )

are you saying it's dangerous to use sabot slugs in a mod choke or just usless because it's not rifled

it's not effective because it's not rifled. i've never heard of somebody even trying to shoot sabot slugs out of a smooth bore because there's no point in it.

Thanks for the correction, I got my skeet and trap mixed up. Maybe if I actually go try it instead of just saying that I will I might get it straight. I just don't think they'll like my 14" HP9-1. :p
