I'm new to Shotguns and anything bigger than a 22lr.

Can you get a 870 with interchangable choke tubes or is the choke fixed? What models come with interchangable options.

Thanks.

in general most new models that you buy with barrels over 18.5" will have removable chokes. the 'tactical' has its 18.5" barrel threaded for chokes as well.

usually its the shorter barreled models, as well as older guns that will have fixed choke barrels.

what type of 870 are you looking for? would narrow it down for people a bit. there are a lot of 870 configurations.

Thanks that's what I thought but before I walked in to store I figured I could ask here. That way I can look like nob electronically instead of on purpose.

Choke for goose and duck from a blind any thoughts then?

Most older 870s will not have choke tubes. Most newer bird guns will. You will not look like a nob, noob or a knob if you walk into a gun shop and point to an 870 and ask if it has choke tubes. Express 870s come with modified choke tube installed. Many others come standard with improved cylinder, modified and full choke tubes. Improved cylinder or modified will work well for your stated purpose. Factory installed remington chokes are called rem chokes. My only advice is a warning. Do not buy an 870 used with aftertmarket tubes of unknown origin.

Modified is almost always a safe bet, Imp. cyl also have their uses, other then that the most usefull with steel shot tend to be aftermarket in my opinion. I geuss full is popular with some folks but I find with shot larger then #2 it kinda blows the pattern.

What are you planning to do with your shotgun? Clays, skeet, grouse, geese, deer, etc.

Make big boom noise. Seriously Geese, duck but it would be nice to have the option of changing the barrel to slugs/ buck shot. When I'm in bear country.

Yes the K is silent in knob. If I could spell I'd be dangerous!

I use an 870 Wingmaster and use improved cylinder for most of my duck hunting. I usually use 2 3/4 or 3" #4 steel (Kent is my favorite brand right now) and usually have no ethical shots over 25 yards. For goose I'd probably use modified and switch up to #2 in a 3" shell.
