Chokes - Silly question

Disclaimer: I obviously know nothing about chokes.

I have a Mossberg 500 with a plain 18' barrel, and a 24" rifled sighted barrel for deer.

Am looking at trying turkey hunting, and I know to pattern test my barrel as I may only get one shot, so...

Question: Can I put a turkey choke in my short non-rifled barrel, would this require gunsmithing, am I better off just saving or trading for a longer barrel and then putting a choke in?

Help clear up my ignorance please. Guys at gunshops are always snobby when you ask simple questions. CGNers are usually more patient.

Post or PM me. Thanks!

You can put an aftermarket turkey choke tube into any barrel that is threaded for choke tubes. Your short barrel would make a perfect turkey gun, way more maneuverable and handier than a long barrel. You would probably want to mount some sights on it, or mount a red-dot to the receiver.

Is your deer barrel a rifled barrel, or is it a smooth-bore with rifle sights mounted on it? If it's a rifled barrel, it's meant for sabot slugs, and is useless for turkey loads. If it's a smoothbore, it would also be great for turkey use, with the correct choke installed.

I would use whichever barrel you have which is threaded for tubes. If neither one has threads, you can have a gunsmith cut threads into one of them, or you could simply look for another barrel that is already threaded. Personally, I would get a new smoothbore barrel, in the 18- to 20-inch range, with fibreoptic sights and choke threads.

Simply answer if your mossy 18 barrel allows chokes then you can buy an after choke and you will have a turkey killing machine. If not you need to have to get another barrel or have the barrel threaded for chokes.

Let me kick this topic back to the top:
Shooter's Choice gunsmith said the Mossberg barrels he sees are too small to be cut for chokes - that I'd have to get a barrel factory-made for chokes. Or get another barrel entirely.
Truth? Myth? Anybody recommend a smith near KW who could give a 2nd opinion on this?

Thanks

The barrel walls on a Mossberg may well be too thin for the choke tubes that he installs. There are however very few guns that cannot have tubes installed by someone specializing in thin-wall chokes such as Briley, Teague or Precisions Arms in King, Ontario. You might also try Lawry's as they are still a Briley dealer. Whether it's worth the added cost of having specialized chokes installed in a Mossberg is up to you but the installation and choke costs may be higher than just buying a new barrel. Also I would not expect you'd get your gun back before turkey season.

Briley Thinwalls in a Mossberg barrel? Don't bother with the expense,

Get a new/used Mossberg barrel that is threaded and comes with chokes.
You can find them everywhere,

I am on the side that goes for a new barrel threaded for chokes. Especially since the Mossberg barrels are pretty cheap compared to the $600+ for a new barrel to put on my Benelli. It is cheaper for me to just go out and buy a new shotgun with turkey and deer barrels than order new.

I would love to have multiple barrels for my Benelli given how fast the change over is. Funding currently just will not allow it.

yea benelli are fun to shoot but cant beat the price for mossy..
I beat my mossberg 500 in the bush, dropped in mud and i still dont feel bad about it and still works good! lol
maybe my next move is to save ammo and slap grouse right on the head with it !
