Choosing a scope for M14

So I'm thinking of scoping my M14. I'm young, but I have crappy eyes, and to get out to the ranges I' like to hit I think some glass will definitely give me the advantage.
Its not going to my hunting rifle, (well, maby...) but I've heard these rifles are hard on scopes so I was wondering what you guys have been using effectively that wont break the bank. If I had unlimited funds I'd probably go pick up a Bushnell 6500 elite or something, but trying to keep it under about half that price range.
The rifle itself groups amazing, the other day I shot a 3MOA 5 shot group with bulk copper washed ammo. (thank you M14doc for selling me the awesome rifle btw) it made a perfect half square. I got the target in my gun bag still, I'll post pictures later this week if I get a chance. At 200 yards I have a hard time seeing the target, and I'd really like to get comfy shooting at 300 once I get a chance to whip up some hand loads.

I'd get a Leupold because of the warranty and durability of them. You can get VXI's for as little as $230.00. I am using a 3-9x40 Leupold that has a balistic reticle to approx show holdovers to 500 yards. VXII's are around $375, roughly.

The intended use plays far more of a role than the cartridge or rifle. Low magnification and wide field of view benefits those wanting to acquire target on site and shoot fast. High magnification, fine reticle, adjustable parallax benefit stationary targets and precision shooting. The wrong scope is like the wrong footwear. It might work, but its clumsy.
 
I put a Elcan Specter Dr 1-4 on top of my buddies M14 at the range, zeroed, had some fun.

It worked well but it looks rediclious, like very silly and is really high....
 
I have a Bushnell elite 10x40 fixed power on mine. I use it at the range out to 300m and am happy with it. I picked it up on the EE for $200 and another one popped up not too long ago.
 
Any decent quality scope should hold up well enough. Don't forget to factor in the cost of the mount to your budget. Getting a good mount is likely a more important factor in getting a scope to work properly on these rifles. As mentioned in the previous post, you are also going to be dealing with an elevated scope position due to clearing the rear sight. This is going to necessitate getting some kind of cheek riser, or living with a semi-chin-weld. I tried a couple different configurations with conventional scopes and none of them really worked for me. Ended up going with an Ultimak rail and a scout-type scope. Works for my needs (ie. out to 500yds), and I can swap out to a red-dot relatively easily if I want to play CQB.
 
I can't stop LAUGHING at Matt_dal123's gif ... HAHAHAHA! I've used leupold 3-9x40 scopes, Millet 1-4, eotech ... depends on what you are going to do with it ... short, medium or long range shooting???

More the former than the latter. Any suggestions? 3-9 x 50?

I don't think I'd bother with a 50mm objective. A 3-9x40 is a jack of all trades, some might say master of none. Well that last part wouldn't be fair. For general plinking or hunting, its a good match for me and my m14. If it was for real fast shooting, like some sort of action shooting game, an even lower power would be a good idea.
