Choosing the Best UTV Gun Rack for Safety and Easy Access

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for advice on selecting a UTV gun rack and would appreciate recommendations from those with real-world experience. I use my UTV for hunting and property management, so I need a rack that keeps firearms secure, protected from vibration, and easy to access when needed.

What mounting style works best, overhead, rear window, or floor mounted?

Are there specific brands or models that hold up well on rough trails and in different weather conditions?

I’m also interested in any installation tips, legal considerations, or common mistakes to avoid.

I’ve got the one from Cabelas that straps across the back window. It holds two firearms and has several zippered pockets. It’s very durable and well padded to protect against vibration. It has served me well going on for 5 years.
 
I have tried several styles and types over the years.

Really depends on your UTV style. Is it more rancher style set up or more of a trail machine?


I use these: https://www.kolpin.com/en-us/shop/accessories/gun-transport-carriers/rhino-grips/xlr/rhino-grip-xlr/ for the interior, mounted overhead. I have two sets mounted. To carry a rifle and a 22.
Drawbacks. They do get some dust on them in dusty conditions. Yea you could gun sock them, but then it takes a bit longer to get them out of the sock.

I have used both the kolpin stronghold, exterior mounted in the back behind the cab in the box. This one has been good, and have kept my firearms safe without any issues. You do get a bit of dust still in very dusty conditions, but keeps the mud and water out fairly well.

They are a bit harder to find in Canada, plus have a different rack setup, that is just as hard to find. I prefer it, as I have a bit of a larger scope and chassis style set up for my hunting rifle and find it has more room, and is easier to get the rifle in and out compared to the kolpin stronghold style. It seems no to seal as well for the dust either, but water and mud are not an issues and things stay dry, just a bit dusty.
