OK, i'm thinking of building a long range rifle 0-3000 yards, just for sh1ts. I am debating on the caliber to choose. I like the .300 win mag because the ammo isn't overly expensive and easy to find. Also how much money can I save on reloading it? I also looked into the 7mm Remington ultra mag, but it seems pretty pricey for ammo. Yes I can handle the .300 win mag, I shot one without a break and the recoil wasn't too bad. My ideal set up would be a savage 111 in .300 win mag with a bushnell elite 6500 4.5-30x50. Let me know what you guys think.

7MM rum eats barrels. I know cause I have one.
What do you have against muzzle brakes?

I don't have anything against brakes, the reason I said that was because I know ill get comments like "did you ever shoot a .300 win mag before, the recoil is bad". And ill put a break on the savage 111 when I get it for sure

3000yds? 50BMG

0 to 3000 yards ??? are you serious or just using that for a example ???
I take my .300 wm's to 1800 yard's with a 215gr Berger & H-1000 powder. Both of these rifle have 28in Pac-Nor's 1 with a muzzle brake. , but if your going for 3000 yard's . Then you best get yourself a ,50BMG .... And after testing 2 bushnell elite's 4.5-30x50 scope's for long range I would have to say, save up & buy something with better tracking. Both of mine failed after numerous firing's. I now have 2 night force's sitting on my long range rig's.

For 3000 yards, get ready for a serious investment.
Here are some of the calibres that you might want to consider:
.338 Lapua Magnum
.375 CheyTac
.408 CheyTac
.416 Barrett and of course the ever popular
.50 BMG

Of those, only the .338 LM and the .50BMG would be considered even relatively common, however Wolverine Supplies carries Barrett, and I think PGW Timberwolves are available in .408 CheyTac & .416 Barrett.

No matter what you ultimately choose, have fun reaching out 3000 yds.

I'm sure you can use .300 Win Mag to shoot over 2,000 yards with the Savage gun with a pencil barrel however the chance of hitting the target, let's say 24"x24" is slim. Which means is that your ammo will be waste a lot of money.

My experience and other long range shooters would prefer to invest custom rifles for long range shooting.

If you mistyped 3,000 yards which you meant 300 yards, then my recommend is 6BR or 284 Win. Easy to reload and shoot very accurate. You will be more happy to shoot more than .300 Win Mag.

Just a thought.

Not to sound like an idiot but... Do you know how far 3000 yards is? I mean, not in numbers, but in a qualitative sense?

-Find a straight piece of road and pull up next to a land mark like a parked car or a large mail box.
-Reset your trip odometer.
-Drive down the road until your odometer reads "2.8" kilometers.
-Park, get out and look back at your "target"

You may be surprised by what 3000 yards "really" looks like. I did this after seeing some videos of someone shooting at 2500 yards. It looked really far in the video. It looked unimaginably far in real life.

Either way, power to ya. It sounds like fun trying.

I can't fathom a spotting scope capable of offering any help at all.

Ooh. Better yet: buy another iPhone, set it on a tripod facing the target a few feet away, then FaceTime yourself back to your phone sitting beside you. Remote spotting scope!

3000 yards and your worried about cheap ammo! That kind of distance your gonna need something along the 408 cheytac based cartridges. 338 snipetac, 375 snipetac, 375 cheytac, 408, 416 Barrett, 50 bmg. 338 lapua, 338 Norma etc. good luck on your quest that's a very long shot.

Good video of a fella trying it. Even after maxing out his scope adjustment, he still had to hold the cross hairs 225 FEET over the target!

Also extra challenging cuz he's hanging upside down from the bottom of the earth.

Whoops, did not mean 3000 yards. Maybe 1000 max. And a pervious person commented and said that the bushnell elite 6500 failed after firing with a high caliber rifle. Anyone else have this problem? Will it hold up on a .300wm?

Read up on guys that fly RC planes FPV. You can set up a wireless target camera for pretty cheap and will work out to 5-10km pretty easy. Some guys are going 80+km but it has to be line of sight out that far.

1000 yard gun that you want decent factory match ammo for? Only two choices the way I see it, 308 and 6.5 Creedmore. I would normally suggest 284 winchester and 260 remington, but these both require reloading to max out the effectiveness of the cartridge. 300 win mag would be great too, but a lot of BANG for 1000 yards.

Any tips on where to look? I'm in market for something to view Upto 600m and wireless seems to be cheapest way.
