Chopping barrel

Hi all
I just picked up a cheap Sears model 684 (Cooey model 84 clone) in 12 guage that I want to turn into a backpacker gun. How much of the barrel can I legally lop off, and any advice on how to do it?

I cut mine at 18.5 inches and use a hacksaw I use a hose clamp as a guide to stay straight and clean it up with a file afterwards.

The barrel cannot be cut down to less than 457 mm or 18". Also, the overall length must remain above 660mm or 26". If either length is under, you have made a prohibited firearm. If both lengths are good then it will remain non restricted. Does NOT need to be re verified or anything.

i used a pipe cutter once, worked real well.

So, what did you wind up using to cut it?

I used a pipe cutter, then put it on a grinding wheel to remove the tapered inner edge. Some sanding with emery cloth gave it a nice smooth surface, and I am going to cold blue it to finish it off.
