Chopping my shotgun barrel myself, legal?

Who said it had to make sense? We're talking about gun laws...

As an example, if you are not allowed to do such and such things to your car. There will be detail reports available, explaining you why they came up with this rules.

Trying to find out why they have such and such gun laws will get you: "Because we said so"
 
A word to the wise, measure twice cut once. I wrecked a Moss 500 barrel once by cutting it too short. Now I make a point of cutting them longer than minimum, usually about 18 3/4" even on a pump. That way I know it will clean up over length. Also, regarding the longer than necessary barrel on a pump, my idea is that many cops don't know the FA well and many think that the 18 1/2" length applies to pump, too. I figure I would rather carry an extra 1/2 or 3/4" of barrel than get in a peeing match with a "misinformed" but power tripping cop.
