Hi. I only recently signed myself up for a non-restricted course with plans on getting a PAL as soon as I can, and was planning on getting into shooting civilian side. I'm a current member of the CAF. I was thinking of grabbing an SKS or two, which has been a plan of mine for years now. Looks like I'm just going to have to cross my fingers and hope the new sales recording laws / gun ban is slow enough to materialize. Yikes.

Well, my course won't happen until May. Long backlog, apparently. So time is not on my side.

Definitely afraid of the semi-automatic ban to keep rifles out of the hands of the back-country peasants. I'm a big city boy myself, used to be afraid of guns like any latte-slurper of my particular extraction, looked down on the hicks, and never even touched a firearm until I was handed a C-7 rifle. Lost my irrational fear pretty quick. When the only weapons you've ever fired are capable of automatic and have 30 round mags (or more, for the C9), the whole thing just seems stupid to me.

Would suck big time to finally grab a cheap SKS, get a range membership, and *bang*, have the RCMP busting down my door the next week.

Get your sks as soon as you can and no one will know you have it cause it’s non restricted
If they come lookin for it send em to Canmore to look for mike
BTW welcome to CGN!

That would be fine and dandy, until I have to move provinces by plane. Hard to lug along a rifle if that happens.

Anyway, worst comes to worst, I'll guess I'll settle for a bolt action, and wait for a repeal of the laws.

How many excuses do you need to come up with not to buy an SKS or six?

If you're waiting for your PAL there is nothing stopping a friend from buying an SKS or two and selling them to you when your PAL is in hand. Welcome aboard.

Not in my neck of the woods- I'm from the Starbucks demographic, sadly. Imagine the most anti-gun demographic in Canada, and you have an idea of my background and general surroundings.
