Pictured below is the Christensen Arms FFT Stainless. In comparison to the Titanium, this 6.5 PRC weighs in at 5.4lbs. Nice looking rifle but I just don't get the idea of a 22in 300 win mag unless you can run a can on it??

Christensen Arms is following the direction of Gunwerks research in optimum barrel lengths for long distance hunting rifles. Short barrels give a lot to the hunter being easier to carry, maneuverable, and points quickly on target. On the downside, the short barrel also takes away velocity anywhere between 25 - 50fps per inch taken off the barrel depending on what its chambered for. However, velocity is not the most important part of the equation for long distance shooting. Its those high BC bullets that retain energy and velocity down range that makes all the difference. The bullets typically used for long distance hunting are match bullets being rebranded for hunting. These bullets have thin copper jackets and are typically a non-bonded core with either a ballistic tip or a hollow point. A Berger VLD or Hornady ELD-X are two examples. These bullets suffer badly in the high velocity end of the spectrum as they can fail to penetrate well and they expand too quickly doing a lot of meat damage. But at long range, when the velocity is low, suddenly these bullets perform very well with good penetration and expansion. You don't need to look much further than the 6.8 Western vs the .270WSM as an example that velocity isn't the most important thing for long distance shooting. If you're not using the rifle for long distance hunting, maximum 400yards, then you really do not need the longer barrel. So with Gunwerks research into the subject, they have determined the optimum barrel length for their long distance hunting rifles is 22" for magnum rifles and 20" for non-magnum rifles. They're still capable of long distance shooting while being handy for hunters to carry. Remember, they're building these guns for hunting and not long distance competition. Of course its better to have the extra 50 - 100fps velocity if you're using a competition specific rifle where weight and size of the gun doesn't really matter.
